It is strange, but I suspect it's a holdover from when players were discouraged from fraternizing with opponents, likely out of fear they'd conspire to throw games or, arguably worse, compare contracts. The owners were a justifiably skittish bunch when it came to their control of players.

To my knowledge, no members of the Giants stopped to console Brooklyn's Ralph Branca after he surrendered Bobby Thomson's home run on October 3, 1951, losing both the game, a 13.5 game lead, and the pennant, suggesting that if that's what's wrong with America, it's been wrong for at least 74 years.

Sure, but I think what'll be remembered isn't the IBB, but Kerkering muffing the ground ball, electing to throw home, then making a bad toss.

I hope he keeps things in perspective. A lot had to go wrong to bring him to that moment.

Such an arresting shot. The Dodgers don't just stream around him. They *weave* around him. Betts begins skipping, while this man regrets ever having picked up a baseball.

Baseball, man. Designed to break your heart.

Had extra lumber, built a new work bench.
A work bench inside a garage. The bench sits beneath a hanging lamp, and behind it a pegboard wall holds tools and assorted junk.

repost this if an editor has ever saved you from yourself

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

On this day in 1925, Christy Mathewson passed away at the age of 45. One of the most beloved athletes of his era, he was baseball’s first true superstar. Here’s my painting of him warming up before a game at West Side Park in 1907, based on the photography of Francis P. Burke.
