🍌 These slugs are a pretty big deal (literally and figuratively)! Just in time for Snail Search 2025, California finally has a state slug: 𝘼𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙭, a.k.a. the banana slug. bit.ly/CAStateSlug
Banana slugs are also romantics at heart. Slugs are hermaphrodites, and they reproduce by exchanging sperm with their mate, but banana slugs sometimes spend hours in foreplay before doing the deed. Sometimes, their penises get caught, and they have to use their radula to chew themselves out of the embrace. By Andy Goryachev/Wikipedia.

I think this is the first ever iNaturalist based bioblitz to be held in Sri Lanka. Diyasaru Park is on the east side of Diyawanna Lake. As a child I knew the area on the opposite side that was converted into the Beddagana Wetland Park.

Sea stars are excellent at regenerating. Most can grow back a lost arm, & some species can grow an entire body back from a severed arm! ⭐️ But even these stars of regrowth make mistakes. Regeneration errors cause some individuals to have 1 too many or 1 too few arms.

To avoid males as much as possible, female Rocky Mountain Parnassians don’t fly much. Instead, they spend most of their time running around on the ground!

Check out the mantis shrimp🦐✨ It's actually not a shrimp, but a stomatopod with impressive raptorial claws that deliver punches at speeds of 10 m/s — one of the fastest movements in the animal kingdom. This strike is so fast, it can even boil water! #FunFactFriday

Why DigIn?

The marine biome is the LARGEST but LEAST KNOWN biome on earth. Invertebrates make up about 75% of marine species but most specimens are essentially invisible outside of museum collections. DigIn is adding data from 7.5 MILLION specimens to online portals. #digitization #naturalhistory
