I know we all want to discover the wonder drug that will cure the horrible diseases, but to do that, we need to invest in basic, unsexy, foundational research on how the systems work. Funding can’t all be drug development.

The director of student media at Indiana University was fired amidst a dispute between university leadership and editors at the Indiana Daily Student over what content gets printed in the student newspaper.

As director of student media, Jim Rodenbush did not directly oversee or have any say over the content published in the IDS, per a charter between the IDS and the university. But he told IndyStar his firing follows a series of meetings with IU Media School leadership in which it grew increasingly apparent they were expecting him to officially prohibit students from publishing news.

Strangers on the internet, I come to you for advice. After foot surgery, I am once again able to wear my 25-year-old Timberland 6-inch boots after they sat idle for maybe 6 years. Alas they are no longer waterproof. Do you think it's worth trying to clean and recondition them? Or should I replace?

Have heard it used among grad students in a jokey way, and I was last in grad school in 1991. It meant "working on their dissertation." "Where's Fred?" "He's in the library dissertating." Could also be used for having entered the process: "How far along is Fred on his degree?" "He's dissertating."
