Hey. I'm V. I'm a horror writer, and for the moment I'm focusing on short stories with the intent to self publish. Sit down, grab some coffee, and read about all the horrible monsters I conjure up. Would love to make some new friends!

The Territory (Sarah Govett) is actually a solid YA sci fi entry with some better handled themes than some other additions to the genre -- I've just outgrown it, so I'm passing it along. CHUCK.

Orphan, Monster, Spy (Matt Killeen) was an entertaining if not entirely realistic read. MC felt like they were able to succeed at absolutely everything pretty easily. CHUCK.

Ring (Koji Suzuki) is a similar three stars. A slow burn that also has a lot of weirdly misogynistic comments about women? That I honestly struggled to get into. CHUCK.

Sorry for the silence. Updating my book list atm with my most recent read, James Hynes' "Sparrow," which is an interesting three stars but a bit of a meandering story. CHUCK.

Okay so I have finally acquired an ereader! Please rec some your indie self pub ebooks for me to read! Apparently Amazon no longer allows you to download a file so that's out, unfortunately, but any info on platforms is helpful while I look into publishing my own

Oh and also a couple of mangas - Orange (the entire series) which was a tearful ride from start to finish, and the first volume of Golden Sheep, which is exactly what I want in a slice of life manga and I'll def pick up the rest

Reads this week: Automatic Eve (a CHUCK, short stories with little substance), Halloween Night 1 & 2 for the spooky vibes (very weak premises, and again hitting the blonde/brunette/redhead count), and finally There Will Be Lies, a gorgeous Native American horror - a keep!

So Darkest Dungeon didn't really do it for me -- that's a CHUCK. Fishflies, on the other hand, I really enjoyed, I highly recommend if you can!

Other reads this week:

Black Lily (Phillippa Stockley), CHUCK, too much telling and not a lot of nuance. Picture Imperfect (Jacqueline Wilson), KEEP and it made me cry, and Teacher's Pet (Richie Tankersley Cusick), a cliche but kept as the collection. Also again with blode/brunet/redhead

A great start that ultimately fails to bring together a cohesive and fun final act. CHUCK, which is disappointing
Currently reading:

The Dissonance (Shaun Hamill). I do love a good coming of age, small town mystery mixed with horror (IT is my favourite book) so fingers crossed for this one.

The Elites (Natasha Ngan) - DNF because it felt far too cliched and much to YA for my taste. CHUCK.

They Bloom at Night (Trang Thanh Tran) - a haunting four stars and a KEEP, I really enjoyed this one. Confusing in places, but the body horror and atmosphere are superb.

Book roundup -

Come Find Me - felt too short to really let the stories get going, which is a shame. CHUCK

The Ghost Bride (Yangsze Choo) - liked it, but the instalove triangle turned me off it, CHUCK

That's a pretty title! I really like it :)
Also read in the interim - Hidden Pictures, which is fun but falls apart by the end (CHUCK), The Only Child (DNF, couldn't mesh with the writing), and Jurassic Park (five stars, KEEP), finishing up the week with The Elites (Natasha Ngan)

So wow this took a while to get through. It's a KEEP, though I wouldn't call it a fun read. A very indepth coverage of the case, I recommend if you're interested.

Roll 319, Perfect Murder, Perfect Town by Lawrence Schiller. This case has been one of my special interests for a long time and I tracked this book down a while ago, so it'll be interesting to have another deep dive.

A KEEP as it's part of my collection, but this was shlocky, nonsensical fun. They're like 80s horror movies in book form 🤣

Also I swear every novel has a blonde, brunette, and redhead. I'm going to start keeping count.

Can you believe I've actually cleared a shelf of my TBR list! I'm genuinely very proud of myself; space is so limited, I have to be so choosey about what I keep! Only about 350 left to go...

It was a really cute story! Charlie was a breath of fresh air as a character and he and Sam's relationship had lovely chemistry. I was very pleasantly surprised by the well done LGBT themes and having a MC with disabilities -- it felt like rep that fit in very naturally, defo recommend it!
