Books for the last couple of weeks -

HCA Fairy Tales wound up being a rather delightful slog? Very cute, keep.

RL Stine's The Babysitter I-IV - cliché in the best way, keep.

We Are the Dead (Mike Shackle) - not a fair, inconsistent worldbuilding, weird about women. chuck.

Book 358 is Hans Christian Andersen's "Fairy Tales," which is a nice choice for Halloween!

The Territory (Sarah Govett) is actually a solid YA sci fi entry with some better handled themes than some other additions to the genre -- I've just outgrown it, so I'm passing it along. CHUCK.

Orphan, Monster, Spy (Matt Killeen) was an entertaining if not entirely realistic read. MC felt like they were able to succeed at absolutely everything pretty easily. CHUCK.

Ring (Koji Suzuki) is a similar three stars. A slow burn that also has a lot of weirdly misogynistic comments about women? That I honestly struggled to get into. CHUCK.

Okay so I have finally acquired an ereader! Please rec some your indie self pub ebooks for me to read! Apparently Amazon no longer allows you to download a file so that's out, unfortunately, but any info on platforms is helpful while I look into publishing my own

Oh and also a couple of mangas - Orange (the entire series) which was a tearful ride from start to finish, and the first volume of Golden Sheep, which is exactly what I want in a slice of life manga and I'll def pick up the rest

Reads this week: Automatic Eve (a CHUCK, short stories with little substance), Halloween Night 1 & 2 for the spooky vibes (very weak premises, and again hitting the blonde/brunette/redhead count), and finally There Will Be Lies, a gorgeous Native American horror - a keep!

Other reads this week:

Black Lily (Phillippa Stockley), CHUCK, too much telling and not a lot of nuance. Picture Imperfect (Jacqueline Wilson), KEEP and it made me cry, and Teacher's Pet (Richie Tankersley Cusick), a cliche but kept as the collection. Also again with blode/brunet/redhead

A great start that ultimately fails to bring together a cohesive and fun final act. CHUCK, which is disappointing
Currently reading:

The Dissonance (Shaun Hamill). I do love a good coming of age, small town mystery mixed with horror (IT is my favourite book) so fingers crossed for this one.

The Elites (Natasha Ngan) - DNF because it felt far too cliched and much to YA for my taste. CHUCK.

They Bloom at Night (Trang Thanh Tran) - a haunting four stars and a KEEP, I really enjoyed this one. Confusing in places, but the body horror and atmosphere are superb.

Book roundup -

Come Find Me - felt too short to really let the stories get going, which is a shame. CHUCK

The Ghost Bride (Yangsze Choo) - liked it, but the instalove triangle turned me off it, CHUCK
