Some of you may recall this post. I thought I'd provide an update on how planning for my analog course is going...

It's been a mix of expected and unexpected, but welcome, surprises --
Fellow academics, I'm doing it. Going all in. Pulling the plug, literally.

This is on my syllabus for Spring 2026: "This is an analog class. No Canvas; this syllabus is your guide."

All readings are printed books; hand-written exams; no laptops. #academicbluesky #Highered #academia #Rutgers

The problem with climate change is we have to convince a bunch of people that future people are actual people, when they don't even believe some currently alive people are people.

New poster! Only two weeks until my workshop “Sails, Silk, and Ancient Seas”. I am happy that so many students have taken an interest in ancient Mediterranean and Chinese seafaring. Reviewing their work and helping them refine their posters has taught me a lot about Chinese maritime history as well.

This wasn't "unlikely" – it was very predictable. Mamdani is shrewd and charismatic enough to know how to handle Trump face to face.

Once upon a time, we featured an image of Magdalen's kitten, Ozymandias, in our newsletter. We figured it might be a gentle contrast to our regular diet of planning and local politics. The grey ball ...

When reading stories like this, I always find myself coming back to (self-)value. Students matter; their learning and development matters. Courses like this tell students they don't matter and that they aren't worth their lecturers' time. The consequences are horrifying and far-reaching.
I've said it before and I will say it again many times, people using "AI" to design and deliver 'teaching' to students, to mark their work, and in this case to (!) generate literal voice overs are risking their jobs, and frankly they *should* be at risk if they do this sort of thing:
‘We could have asked ChatGPT’: students fight back over course taught by AI
Staffordshire students say signs material was AI-generated included suspicious file names and rogue voiceover accent
