Did any of our followers attend the Burning of the Clavie last night? This fire festival unique to Burghead on the Moray Coast greets the old New Year. It's certainly one way to keep warm during the cold snap!
Photos taken during previous years.

It's been an INSANE day! It has also been an EDO day.
EDO = Emergency Day Off 😆

Just back from a 25km, 9hr trudge from the door, in the kind of conditions you dream about for most of the year but know you're unlikely to get.

-13C first thing, -5C to finish, and didn't see a soul 😀

Simply perfect conditions on an extended walk around Loch an Eilein and Rothiemurchus Forest today. Very quiet - only saw two other people out at Loch an Eilein.

If you are heading for the hills (and can get there on the snowy roads!) be sure to always check the Scottish Avalanche Information Service. There's tons of unstable powder snow in many areas - always a good time to remember to be avalanche aware.

I think we can safely say it is still winter today.

Still snowbound here - so got out by snow shoeing up Tom an Uird. Ridiculously soft powder so very exhausting!

Plans for a first real walk of the year today were quickly changed into a hike from a snow-bound Walkhighlands HQ through the woods into town to get shopping. Still magical!

There's a new way to browse and find walks to do for 2026! A *much* requested feature - you can now browse a map of Scotland will ALL our route lines shown at once, to help you find the one you want to do (and easily see how they connect and intersect).

This a very good list from @walkhighlands.co.uk. I might quibble at Mam na Gualain and make a case for Stob a Choin, Stob Dubh, Rois-Bheinn, Beinn Trilleachan, Sgurr Nan Eugallt, Fuar Tholl or Sgurr Innse. It shows the rich choice we have! www.walkhighlands.co.uk/news/our-pic... B n

Hope you got the chance to head out for a memorable Boxing Day walk. It's been so frosty here we think it ought to count as a White Christmas even if there wasn't any snow.

The Walkhighlands app has been commended in the @tgomagazine.bsky.social reader awards! “Essential for walking in Scotland”, commented one reader to TGO. Another said they “have explored areas I would never have thought of on paths I would never have found thanks to this app!”

Sad news today as the historic former railway bridge over the River Spey at Garmouth has partly collapsed into the river. It can no longer be crossed, which means that the Moray Coast Trail cannot now be completed in full.

Thanks to Rachael Millar for providing the photos.

Surely this is Scotland's snazziest trig point?
A re-visit to Ben Rinnes was needed as we knew the old decaying trig point had been encased in steel this summer by the Friends of Ben Rinnes. It has a beautiful granite view indicator too.

This is a heads-up about fake AI accounts which have proliferated across social media.

The screenshot is from a genuine thread asking for advice on a mountain route; there are plenty of useful, real human replies.
The attempted reply (we stopped it) looks very real - but it is from an AI bot.
