🌳Scotland needs Paths Into Nature!🚶

We’ve launched an ambitious joint manifesto ahead of the 2026 Holyrood election, backed by 7 partner orgs in Scottish Outdoor Recreation Alliance.

Our goal? ✅ Make Scotland’s world-class access rights an everyday reality for all!

I’ve no idea why anyone would want to walk through an area being felled by heavy machinery when there is a reasonable marked detour. There are sometimes signs left up when no work is taking place, which would breach the code and causes confusion - but no suggestion that happening here.

Until the end of October, the main hill path to the Cobbler is closed on weekdays Monday - Friday due to Forestry and Land Scotland operations. There is a signed diversion using the SW side of the Allt a' Bhalachain. The path is open as usual on weekends.

This is a wonderful article all about The Rut by @countrysideben.bsky.social - full of interesting details and explaining the biology and lifecycle of deer! 👏

I just sent it to my son bc he heard it for the first time on a cracking walk over Maoile Lunndaidh et al a week or so ago.
Looking SWish down towards Loch Monar (not the nearer lochan!) from the - quite low 😏 - bealach between Maoile Lunndaidh & Sgùrr a’ Chaorachainn

Add in some thick fog obscuring any sighting of the stags, or being in a tent at night, and I find the sound can vary from the 'poorly cow' into the 'angry T-Rex' territory.

Just published 🙂 I've been wanting to write about the rut for years but never had the piccies to back it up till last autum 🦌. It certainly helps when it's happening right outside your house.

Nice. Must have missed that one 4 weeks ago. The walk over Kerrera more than made up for it though.

Thank you for all your hard work!

We've updated our Gallanach walk from Oban so that it now returns along the Druim Mor ridge, with some really stunning views along the way.

The big question is, where are you going to fit the sauce in?

We were updating our routes on the Isle of Lismore on Friday - one of my favourite places to explore. This set of 5 routes can easily be combined, together they explore the island using its network of old established paths and tracks.

The First 1/3 Is The Steepest!

(1/3 of the way through the Munros at long last. That’s a wrap for 2025, unless any smaller hills present themselves.) @walkhighlands.co.uk #BinneinMor #NaGruagaichean #Mamores #MunroBagging #FridayNight🥳
Loch Leven and the Pap of Glencoe. A loch in the Mamores. Me at the summit of Na Gruagaichean. I kept bumping into a friendly English guy called Calvin, who took this photo. Loch Leven in the evening light.

A serene Duddingston Loch in the autumn sunshine.

The land above the shoreline was bare when I was a boy. All of these trees have grown up since.

And here’s a few shots from some of the routes we’ve been checking today - still in Argyll - wonder how many you recognise?

We’re out checking out routes around Oban and north Argyll this week. Here’s a shot from one of the walks yesterday - anyone recognise it?

Plenty of evidence is their handiwork - but daytime so no beavers. Have watched them there before though.

Helen is just back from re-walking the complete Cateran Trail whilst testing a new tent. There have been several small changes to this lovely and perhaps under-appreciated long distance route - our new GPS is up, work on the description is under way.
