Happy Blue Monday.

This is said to be "the most depressing day of the year"... but if so, surely that mean we're all about to start feeling happier each day!

We had some curious roe deer visiting Walkhighlands HQ earlier in the week.

Did any of our followers attend the Burning of the Clavie last night? This fire festival unique to Burghead on the Moray Coast greets the old New Year. It's certainly one way to keep warm during the cold snap!
Photos taken during previous years.

Simply perfect conditions on an extended walk around Loch an Eilein and Rothiemurchus Forest today. Very quiet - only saw two other people out at Loch an Eilein.

If you are heading for the hills (and can get there on the snowy roads!) be sure to always check the Scottish Avalanche Information Service. There's tons of unstable powder snow in many areas - always a good time to remember to be avalanche aware.

I think we can safely say it is still winter today.

Still snowbound here - so got out by snow shoeing up Tom an Uird. Ridiculously soft powder so very exhausting!

Plans for a first real walk of the year today were quickly changed into a hike from a snow-bound Walkhighlands HQ through the woods into town to get shopping. Still magical!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
A bivi in the Fisherfield was our top moment of 2025.... what was yours and what are you hoping 2026 will bring?
January 1, 2026 at 11:56 AM
There's a new way to browse and find walks to do for 2026! A *much* requested feature - you can now browse a map of Scotland will ALL our route lines shown at once, to help you find the one you want to do (and easily see how they connect and intersect).

Hope you got the chance to head out for a memorable Boxing Day walk. It's been so frosty here we think it ought to count as a White Christmas even if there wasn't any snow.
December 26, 2025 at 8:15 PM
We'd like to wish you all a very HAPPY CHRISTMAS!

Huge thanks to everyone for all your support during 2025 - it's much appreciated.

The Walkhighlands app has been commended in the @tgomagazine.bsky.social reader awards! “Essential for walking in Scotland”, commented one reader to TGO. Another said they “have explored areas I would never have thought of on paths I would never have found thanks to this app!”

We'll update when we hear any updates on what is planned for the future of this route.

The next nearest bridge is the A96 bridge near Fochabers. Reaching this would involve an 11km total detour - on roads to Mosstodloch, then a section on the extremely dangerous A96 (strongly advised against), then back on the other side of the river using the Speyside Way.
December 14, 2025 at 3:19 PM
Sad news today as the historic former railway bridge over the River Spey at Garmouth has partly collapsed into the river. It can no longer be crossed, which means that the Moray Coast Trail cannot now be completed in full.

Thanks to Rachael Millar for providing the photos.

Surely this is Scotland's snazziest trig point?
A re-visit to Ben Rinnes was needed as we knew the old decaying trig point had been encased in steel this summer by the Friends of Ben Rinnes. It has a beautiful granite view indicator too.

It's International Mountain Day, so here is a real beauty - stunning Beinn Dearg Mòr.

[3/3] We've also got rid of the Munro Tops map and combined them onto the Munros map, if you have activated the Tops.

More new features for the non hill-baggers amongst you are planned!
December 9, 2025 at 9:41 PM
[2/3] each of the hill-bagging categories.

The biggest changes are to the bagging maps.
- You can mark off hills climbed without having to go to an update page.
- You can re-order by height, a-z, by region, or by whether already climbed
- Each hill has a button to highlight it on the map
etc.

[1/3] We've been working alot on the tech side of Walkhighlands over the last few months. First challenge to make the site run faster and cope much better with the growth in AI bots, but more recently we've been working on redesigning some sections.

We've a new homepage, and new main pages for...

This is a heads-up about fake AI accounts which have proliferated across social media.

The screenshot is from a genuine thread asking for advice on a mountain route; there are plenty of useful, real human replies.
The attempted reply (we stopped it) looks very real - but it is from an AI bot.

Simply glorious conditions on Sgòr Gaoith in the Cairngorms today. A favourite hill, but seldom more beautiful than this. Hope you had time to get out and enjoy the conditions, wherever you went - whether up high, down in the glens, out on the coast or deep in the woods.

We recently passed 2,200 of walking route descriptions on Walkhighlands (we really are supposed to be updating/improving routes and not adding more!!). But did you know that you can also post your own reports from walks on the site too - regardless of whether you followed our routes or not?
