The perfect trio!

If my local Waterstones had a café alongside its excellent book selection and brand new air conditioning, I'd probably just stay in there all day...

Oh wait. Guess I might just do that anyway.

Oplontis, Villa Poppea, Campania. 🏺
One of my fave #MosaicMonday floors may look a bit like linoleum from a 1950s kitchen but is in fact a C1 BC mosaic carpet of white tesserae w irregular inserts of coloured marble. Very apt for a luxurious #Roman salon w frescos of the sanctuary of Apollo.

A long stretch of flooring along the edge of a room, with doorways off to the left. Small white micromosaic tesserae form the background, with larger irregularly shaped marble tiles dotted closely through it. These marble pieces re in shades of red, dark grey, blue and yellowish orange. Some of the coloured pieces are like thickened dashes oriented either parallel or 90 degrees to the border. The luxurious complex at Oplontis may have belonged to Poppea, Nero's second wife or her family. It is in an elite rural suburb of Pompeii and once had views overlooking the sea.

Shared reading has lifelong benefits.

But our research shows that children whose parents or carers like reading themselves are more likely to develop a love of reading.

That's why it's so important we support families to share stories together:

An infographic showing the generational cycles of reading. In the middle are the words "Successive generations enjoy the benefits of reading." This is surrounded by a circle of interlinked arrows reading "Adults enjoy reading", "Families read together", "Children enjoy reading", and "Children develop a reading habit"

Sometimes people tell me that they bought a picturebook because of #NewIllustrationOfTheDay. I love to hear when this happens. If you have bought a picturebook as a result of seeing an image on my social media, do please respond here with the name of the book. Thanks. (Also helpful to share this.)

Reading to children after they can read to themselves.
Thing I hear so often as a bookseller is "oh no, they read to themselves"
How are they to learn more and feel more confident about words if they're not hearing them?
I reckon aim for 12 yrs old.
And start from first days of life.

Parents and educators - there are a lot of discussions in publishing about how to improve reading for pleasure. Is there anything you wish publishing would do more of? Or just understand about kids and reading? Any insights from teaching/parenting of what gets kids reading? #KidLitUK #Edusky #KidLit
