Not just a pretty picture. This is the entrance to Coventry Canal Basin, built in the 1700s. For 150 years, huge quantities of coal and other freight came through that opening, a slow but reliable supply chain that powered the Industrial Revolution and survived heavy German bombing in WWII.

Photograph shows blue sky above a stone bridge over a narrow canal at the entrance to Coventry Canal Basin, which states back to the 1700s. Now a tranquil refuge in the heart of the city, this was once one of the major arteries in the industrial revolution supply chain. Miraculously, you can still navigate from here all the way south to London, and north to Liverpool. The centre of Coventry, one of the largest mediaeval cities in England, was largely destroyed by bombing in World War II, but the canal system survived and this spot is now a lovely place to take a stroll and have lunch or a cup of coffee.
