On irrelevant tennis news: I was looking at challenger entry lists and, in Nottingham CH50, the name of the top seed Johannus Monday was automatically translated to Johannus Lunes.

Johannus Monday (ATP # 237) is a very cool name itself, but Johannus Lunes hits differently!

Interesting exercise. Obviously my personal favorites don’t feature in such lists (with the exception of #13), which is undesirable considering I’m drawn to obscure stuff. That said, I miss Thiem vs Djokovic (2019 ATP finals) and wish there was more clay.

#SOTD Le Lion

Perhaps I should start disclosing that I’m not a labdanum enthusiast and keep forgetting my cute miniature. But this is so good!

The labdanum is polished to the extreme and yet mysterious and full of nuances: deep, incense-y, balsamic, leathery & just slightly animalic. #perfumesky

Lost’s “The Constant” is an accidental Christmas episode that originally aired in Feb 2008. It’s amazing how perfectly Christmas Eve fitted into the narrative and in the show’s timeline, making the time travel subplot “credible”, whilst elevating the power of Penny and Desmonds’s enduring love.

Alt: ***spoiler*** Scene of Lost s4e8 “The Constant”. After having waited for eight years, Penny finally answered Desmond’s telephone call on Christmas Eve (12/24/2004 according to Lost’s timeline)

Perfume comes from per fumare, or “through smoke” in Latin, referring to the belief that to burn nice-smelling things was to call upon the gods. And franc encens in Old French meant the highest quality incense money could bu. #PerfumeSky #FragranceSky

Burned out? You might need some frankincense.

#SOTD Trying to decide if Shalimar L’Essence is either cozy or demure. The initial blast of bergamot is transient and subdued, making you wonder if it’s even there. And I couldn’t detect anything animalic. The dominant mood is a soft & sweet powderiness conferred by vanilla, tonka, almond and iris.

#SOTD Mitsouko is smelling very peachy today. A peach tart with a flaky butter crust where the peaches were sprinkled with lemon juice (something like rangpur lime actually) before baking, conferring acidity. The mossy base is as spellbinding as usual. #perfumesky #fragrancesky

Speaking of vetiver, it’s amazing how much of it forms the backbone of the likes of Diorella, Cristalle, Le Parfum de Thérèse and Mitsouko (the most recent versions, can’t tell about vintage ones). Truly the man behind the curtain!

#SOTD Mr. Vetiver is cool in more ways than one in Vetiver Tonka. Tobacco smoke, burnt sugar, hazelnut and licorice are the supporting players that create an ambiguous and wicked aura, warning you to stay away. But can you really?

Probably someone else already made the joke, but I’d been more shocked if Alcaraz had fired Victor Barber.

#SOTD Dance of the Dawn. Salty & woody patchouli with peppery and smoky nuances on top of an iris & vanilla base.

Recently I’ve found that the iris is in fact an aromachemical called Diviniris and that the fragrance is a callback to the 70s and inspired by a prog rock song. #Perfumesky

After listening to all those different iterations of Wish You Were over the weekend, I’ve came to the conclusion that as much as Another Brick in the Wall pt 2 has a disco vibe, WYWH is a folk rock song of sorts. Not really. But perhaps a little bit. The guitar in the first third does sound folk.
On a different note, first time I noticed that Another Brick in the Wall, pt 2 has a disco vibe. This is one of those super popular songs that I tend to avoid, but here I was listening and paying attention. Definitely disco.

I’ve been so obsessed with patchouli and trying some many patch fragrances that I think my flat is starting to smell like a head shop in the 1970s.

I check the TNNS score app every now and then to see if there is anything going on and I’m kind of startled by all these exhibitions happening in the US. It’s feels like a new phenomenon.

#SOTD Insolence EDP (Les Légendaires). Sentimental candied berries & powdery lipstick violets are challenged by an insolent damp greenness that refuses to be tamed and overpowers everything else. Insolence is all about finding unexpected harmony in loud contradictions. #Perfumesky
Insolence isn’t that old (it was released in the late 2000’s) and in fact I wore it for a while about 13 years ago and still have that pretty purple bottle saved somewhere. In my current understanding, the fragrance is perhaps a bit too decadent, but the fact is that my sample vial is emptying fast.

#SOTD It suddenly feels very cold, so giving up on the chypre dystopia of Barénia Intense and coming back to the reliable warmth of Coco Noir. This lady truly shines when it’s below zero. #Perfumesky #Fragrancesky
