Our new magazine, Equator, is officially out in the world — and here @equatormag.bsky.social
Sign up for preview emails, donate, and get tickets to our launch event in London: equator.org
A group of high-profile writers is launching a new magazine called Equator “to challenge the reigning assumption that global events should be narrated by and for the West,” according to a description shared with Semafor.

Its founding team includes Pankaj Mishra, Mohsin Hamid, Nesrine Malik, Samanth Subramanian, and Suzy Hansen, with editing by Guardian long reads creator Jonathan Shainin.

“In a post-American era, the task of a new magazine is to engage the rich variety of this historical moment on its own terms, without compulsively asking ‘What does it mean for the US?’” the nonprofit outlet, which is primarily based in London, will ask.

Let's hope the large seafood purveyors like #Nestle, #PinnacleFoods, #SofinaFoods, #NomadFoods force their suppliers to provide evidence of their fishing gear marking practices. Voluntary only works if there is market pressure. Why not write your favorite purveyor & ask them about their plans?

Marking fishing gear is key to cutting marine debris, ensuring traceability & fighting #IUUfishing.

@FAO.org Voluntary Guidelines on gear marking offer guidance to tackle abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear & enhance safety at sea.

About 30 of us gathered at the Harry Hays building in #yyc today to say: stop pouring $$ into pipelines + carbon capture.

We showed up because our kids deserve a liveable future. Let’s invest in wind, water, solar + battery storage. 🌍 💚 @coreyhogan.ca #cdnpoli #ForOurKids

It's the biggest flaw in our initial "Towards a Circular Economy..." reports (2012,2013,2014). In the "Growth Within" report of a decade ago we did a better job of addressing rebound effects but IRL those challenges have not yet been tackled adequately (as your chart also shows).

I'm fully with you. We cannot "redesign" our way out of this if our new designs still involve consumption growth (because of resistance to change for reasons of established privilege or aspirational hopes, or because tHe ECoNoMy neEDs iT).

Final countdown! I just wrote to our minister to signal my support for a strong and legally binding #GlobalPlasticsTreaty at #INC5_2. Please do the same! @breakfreefromplastic.org has a great setup with country-specific contact info and a template text in multiple languages to choose from.

I'm so tired of hearing that we need to "teach our students how to use AI" when the thing they most need to use it is a critical-thinking skill set that can only be acquired by NOT using it. I'm tired of hearing that it's inevitable. I'm tired.

Removing #hazardousmaterials from all but the most restrictive uses is key for a viable #CircularEconomy.
Europe can and must continue to take the lead on protecting citizens and landscapes. That benefits the rest of us, too.

Except that geoengineering is big, sexy business (unlike, say, insulating houses) and as we know, tech bros don't 'need' any governance. They just take over the house.

#Amsterdam's canals don't meet most Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point criteria, and not all scientists agree with declaring the #Anthropocene anyway, but these feathered inhabitants' embrace of 'new' materials is terrifying. There's nothing encouraging about the common coot's adaptation.

The UCP government must simply apply the law, enforce regulations, and stop political interference in the Alberta Energy Regulator.

If the government is abandoning the Polluter Pays principle, they should just say so instead of misleading the public with the "Mature Asset Report" scheme. #ableg

I missed this when it came out because *waves hands* but looks like Pathways Alliance/Oil sands companies are continuing their claims that the oil and gas cap is a production cap and saying nothing about the fact that the cap assumes emission reductions in line with pathways commitments 1/

The pan-European PFAS legislation that is in the making will at least reduce the industrial competitiveness argument.

But should we protect the right of consumers to choose products that cause lasting pollution?
wealthofflows.bsky.social
France made great progress on protecting its landscapes, industrial sites, and people against #PFAS. But the cookware exemption makes my blood boil. "Tefal and its supporters say a ban on use in cookware would threaten jobs, limit choice for consumers and hurt France’s industrial competitiveness."
‘Don’t Touch My Pan!’ France Bans Toxic PFAS, Except in Cookware (Gift Article)
A new French ban on “forever chemicals” allows their use in nonstick pans after industry opposition, including a rally by employees of Tefal, a cookware maker.
