RATINGS: Good evenings from O'Connor, Savage and Ehibhatiomhan key in tonight's narrow #readingfc win over Northampton.

I do recommend reading James' article on TTE today!

I obviously have some pretty strong feelings about the football #readingfc are playing that put me in the opposite camp but this piece is well reasoned.

Even when I don't fully agree, I think James raises some valid points
A few too many unforced "errors" today to use some Baseball parlance

A better overall performance from #readingfc though today including from Noel
Al promises to teach you about Mark McGhee! A man I famously cannot inform @thetilehurstend.bsky.social pod listeners about!
Hi @craigcalcaterra.bsky.social it's my birthday and I think it would be funny to share my book about a 1990s tilt at the English Second Division title with your followers. Reposts appreciated. Look, I know @webberross.bsky.social is a US Royals fan, at least

Reading under Hunt get 27% fewer touches in the box vs the same team under Selles in 23/24.

And make no mistake, that 23/24 team was good, not great, so it's not like we're comparing to perfection

Good video.

Backing up your point, we’re:

8th (in L1) for accurate passes
12th for possession

but only:

16th for touches in opp’n box
18th for corners
21st for xG
22nd for accurate crosses
1 of 5 teams not awarded any penalties.

i.e. we’re passing the ball around but not doing much with it…
I found a #readingfc stat that wound me up so much tonight that you guys are getting an unhinged video tomorrow morning...

If you want to hear where Ben and I were at with Selles on October 9 2023, check out this old episode of @thetilehurstend.bsky.social pod.

Interesting to hear what we had to say about a manager who turned things around. This was before Selles moved away from 4222

16 shots for #readingfc but most of them from this cow pasture

Mansfield with 7 shots in the box to our 6 and 3 right in front of the keeper. That's the kind of chance I'd like to see us work more often

I do like the players at least, and think we've assembled a pretty decent squad.
Another #readingfc complaint from yesterday's pod

Reading are actually AHEAD of their expected points total for 25/26

So far, Reading have been the second worst team in the league on balance of play.

That speaks to players who are better than the game plan allows
So here's the big question from yesterday's pod

Which #readingfc young player in the first team has improved under Noel Hunt?

Ashqar Ahmed and...?

@thetilehurstend.bsky.social pod will be out Thursday morning next two weeks so that we can record after the two Car Cup games!
Me hanging onto the last dregs of the weekend watching this game
This toe-tap catch by Jalen Tolbert 🤯
I'd be lying if I said I didn't see positives today

Next step is putting together a consistent 90 minutes of football, rather than abdicating a half of the game before getting into it
Youtube viewers - you've been underserved the last few weeks as I've had (more) technology struggles.

Thanks for your patience - you get the pod before the regular feed this week!

Dez 'n Fin sounds like a pair of old British gangsters, but the pair were anything but dodgy at the back for #readingfc today 😜
RATINGS: Dez Williams solid at the back and Matt Ritchie impressive off the bench as #ReadingFC make it back-to-back home wins.

See how @webberross.bsky.social graded the rest of the Royals in his ratings.

Dear Lord I've had to take youth teams onto so many baseball diamond "football fields" over here in America
Hi, MLS expert here! American football markings on the pitch can be really annoying but they're actually really easy to avoid if you play soccer on a baseball diamond as god intended
Genuinely to the detriment of this game. Two really neat footballing sides, but a pitch scarred by American football markings/sponsors. bsky.app/profile/csta...
Zonal marking for the first goal against Barnsley - haven't heard a peep about it elsewhere

It's not a system that can never work, it's just funny which managers get yelled at for it, and which get to skate by
🎧 pod pod pod, episode 431!

@mrblthomas.bsky.social and @webberross.bsky.social talk through #ReadingFC's defensive mistakes in the defeat at Barnsley, the shape of the team and whether it's too soon to expect more from Noel Hunt with the 2025/26 squad.

For no particular #readingfc reason, I looked into Couhig's record with firing managers at Wycombe

Turns out, he never fired a manager

He had Ainsworth who left for QPR

Then had Bloomfield who returned to the club only a year after a long playing career there

Seems loyal is all I'm saying
Kids do kid things sometimes - Ahmed will learn from today and improve I'm sure. Issues outside of him didn't help him
RATINGS: Daniel Kyerewaa and Jack Marriott the standouts for #ReadingFC on another frustrating afternoon, this time at Barnsley, but it was a poor showing from Ashqar Ahmed at right-back.

Barnsley 3-2 Reading: Player Ratings
Another underwhelming display from Reading led to a defeat at Oakwell.
thetilehurstend.sbnation.com
There's new issues today as well as the old, but it's so easy for Barnsley.

Consistently, Elliott and Savage are outnumbered in the middle third and have no chance of winning the ball and getting a foothold in the game.

As said on the pod, we need adjustments - will they come for #readingfc
