My latest story, "the love song of house and lake" is out now in @onspecmag.bsky.social !!
A love letter to Canadian summers, it asks such brave questions as, "what if your lakeside cottage was.... kind of hot, actually?"
excerpt from "the love song of house and lake" by Gillian Secord, taken from OnSpec Magazine

"Are you watching me?" Adrian blurts out. "In the house? It feels like... someone's always staring."

He can't see house's face too well from this depth, but there's a definite flush of embarrassment across his cheeks. "I'm not you're staying inside me, obviously I can but that doesn't mean I'm intentionally-"

"I knew it," lake says gleefully. "You absolute hypocrite. What do you think, ground? Stay with me instead. I'd take good care of you." She presses a cold kiss onto the side of his neck, right above his pulse. Adrian shivers.

On Spec has long deserved recognition for best semiprozine at the Hugo Awards, but has never even made the ballot because it's Canadian and most Hugo voters are U.S.-based.

2026 will be your final opportunity to nominate an institution that has been an incubator for so much talent.

With our new issue, we are making the sad announcement that this will be the final year for On Spec. See www.onspec.ca for details.

Since it's Black Speculative Fiction Month, I thought I'd share a story I love by a Black author each day. Since I'm starting 10 days in, I'll post a bunch to catch up. I'm going to do 15 from the Top 80 of Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy and 15 from Lightspeed/Nightmare.

It's always tough to see a beloved magazine like On Spec come to an end. 💔 Thank you, Diane Walton, for your amazing contributions! Let's keep celebrating SFF! 🌌✨ #SFF #OnSpec #ThankYou

ICYMI, On Spec, the long-running Canadian SFF magazine, will be closing its doors in December after managing editor Diane Walton steps down :(

Gutted about On Spec. They were my first publishing venue that wasn't a school magazine/university magazine/teens' writing competition, and the editing there was always friendly, helpful and supportive.

The future of UK Independent presses hang by a thread. Supporting the sector is vital: this is where ALL the bravery lies. The big houses are risk averse, but copycat small press successes to revitalise their lists. Small presses are the motor!

Yes, forcing users to upload documents for age verification is going to end very badly.

Collecting sensitive documents, like ID is an especially bad idea.

Do not collect shit that you do not need to collect, ever.

If it's not collected it can't be leaked.

That is all.

Today's theme is the title song from Primus's 1999 album ANTIPOP (far ahead of its time as usual), only with the letters "p-o-p" replaced with the the letters "p-r-i-m-e" for no particular reason. Then replace "drop" with "die" to make the rhyme work (sort of), and you got yourself an earworm
Cover art from Primus's ANTIPOP but with POP replaced with PRIME in a bad photoshop job
