Well, it's official. After our paper last year (onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....), the Slender-billed Curlew is officially declared Extinct today.

Nobody talks about the struggle of trying to find a place to knit a scene into a historical fiction novel that both remains vaguely historically accurate, introduces a main character AND benefits the literary structure of the novel. The pain is real.

Notes from the Margin on ... notes in the margin and the power of a pastel highlighter. There's terrific, enquiring, connecting energy in this piece by @wendypratt.bsky.social.

Great piece from @wendypratt.bsky.social on reading as conversation. I've always loved how unpredictably creative and evocative this process is - whether reading for academic writing or poetry.

I deface my books because I am in conversation with them.

Stopping in to Mrs Lofthouse’s Emporium to sign some copies of The Ghost Lake. Such a thrill.

I'm starting the reading for my upcoming online book group, 'Reading Like A Writer', which kicks off on Thurs 9th Oct with Catherine Lacey's BIOGRAPHY OF X - described by the Guardian as “an impressive and enchantingly strange novel”.
