The saying, "No two snowflakes are alike," is true. While there may be exceptions, every snowflake is formed and affected by the atmosphere differently and follows its own path, and is therefore, unique.

White North Brooklin, Maine 30 March 1973 Dear Mr. Nadeau: As long as there is one upright man, as long as there is one compassionate woman, the contagion may spread and the scene is not desolate. Hope is the thing that is left to us, in a bad time. I shall get up Sunday morning and wind the clock, as a contribution to order and steadfastness. Sailors have an expression about the weather: they say, the weather is a great bluffer. I guess the same is true of our human society-things can look dark, then a break shows in the clouds, and all is changed, sometimes rather suddenly. It is quite obvious that the human race has made a queer mess of life on this planet. But as a people we probably harbor seeds of goodness that have lain for a long time waiting to sprout when the conditions are right. Man's curiosity, his relentlessness, his inventiveness, his ingenuity have led him into deep trouble. We can only hope that these same traits will enable him to claw his way out. Hang on to your hat. Whilst I concede that texting is “convenient”, I much prefer all correspondence to be in the form of a handwritten letter composed on an oak desk by candlelight with a quill dipped into a bottle of ink, enclosed in an envelope with a wax seal, and sent via raven.

Parental supervision is a good thing; book bans endanger freedom of speech & expression.

GIRL ON A SWING Sometimes I find myself floating between ground and sky, grasping for things that don't matter anymore. I recall an afternoon dream that beckoned the muse of memory, the gentle sway of a childhood swing. It began with a sigh and the weightlessness of youth lifting me up, suspending time. Despite the gravity of now- unparalleled grief thrusting me back down, reaching higher for things indescribable, despite the rope prickling my hands. But I was only ten. How could I come to understand then- the futility of grasping at love? At times, memory chafes the spirit, leaving a splinter in the heart. Yet long after love swung away from me, I felt a gentle, swaying breeze, and recalled a child on a swing. The Witness Tree It rose from a seed when the world here was different— before paved roads, before wires split the sky, before the mansion with its wide verandas, stone and timber, built to impress, to endure— yet it is gone now, dissolved into earth and memory. But the tree remains. Its trunk swollen with time, each ring a silent verse of drought and rain, storm and calm. Its bark peels in long ribbons, weathered by a thousand winds. Hollows cradle moss and spider’s lace; branches twist like ancient script against the changing sky. Children once circled it in play, lovers carved promises in tender green years. There were picnics beneath its shade, mourners leaning on its steady girth, soldiers passing by with weary eyes. It has stood through hurricanes that toppled chimneys and dreams, through seasons when snow hung like a shroud from every limb. Roots deep in the unseen earth thread through bone and brick alike, holding fast the ghosts of all who came and left. Now, cars rush past, and no one remembers the names whispered here. But still the tree hums its patient song— a song of holding on, of letting go, of standing still as the world turns and turns again. -Gerhard Oevermann 6/5/25
