It's been a dark week for immigration policy. Our statement on the proposals to restrict routes to settlement below calls out this extraordinary betrayal of migrant communities. More on this soon. Solidarity with all those affected by these announcements.

Shabana Mahmood's proposal to stop being told to "go back home" is to send people "home". Her proposal to stop black and brown people from feeling like they don't belong, is to bake in to the immigration system that they will never belong.

Our Policy Manager Adis Sehic is in Westminster Hall today for a drop-in session with MPs to discuss our concerns over the immigration changes that will overhaul the skilled worker route and double the ILR eligibility to 10 years.

1. These changes will force refugees - people fleeing war, torture, persecution - into a state of permanent precarity for two decades. It is very difficult for people with time-limited leave to secure good work, as most employers look for certainty. Shutting refugees out of good work only... (1/X)

The MAC has told the government that making it more difficult to get ILR would:
1. Have no clear benefits for UK citizens
2. Increase the likelihood of poverty & exploitation of migrant communities
3. Be a step into the unknown given the lack of data on ILR

It is an unnecessary additional cruelty that potential victims of modern slavery often spend months isolated from society, unable to work while they wait for confirmation of their status. Freedom to work helps victims recover, reintegrate & support themselves. This is an important amendment💪
🚨NEWS🚨

Next week marks report stage of the Borders Bill. We're briefing to 2 urgent amendments:

Amendment 43 calls on the right to work for survivors of modern slavery in the NRM &

Amendment 44 calls on changes to the ODW visa
