Dracula's Castle in Transylvania.

Stories abound about Dracula and his castle which are attributed to Bram Stoker's book "Dracula." But what was the castle really like, and what happened there? (See alt txt)

This imposing stone castle named Bran Castle sits on a hill in Transylvania, Romania. Bram Stoker had seen images of Bran Castle with its imposing size and location, and decided this would be the basis of his story about Vlad Dracula.

Vlad Dracula, or Vlad the Impaler is said to have impaled 100,000 people or more. Local tales of vampires also inspired Bram Stoker's book.

Vlad was a local hero for warding off the Ottoman invaders, but he never actually lived in the castle. He was, however, imprisoned there briefly for crimes.

According to local lore, the castle was once the site of a massacre during a siege, where many children lost their lives. Today, their spirits are believed to haunt the castle grounds.
