I'm out here cackling with on prem equipment and private microwave, I laugh at the cloud
It probably was original to the tower when it was built in the 1960s as well.
Oh that poor section of waveguide, no idea how long it's been sitting out there in the elements like that.
People wearing unweathered Stetsons give off such rancid vibes jfc

i think what it enabled is far more important than a contingency that never happened

14,400 phone calls over one TH link. How many engagements were made through these horns? How many births and deaths communicated?

AT&T was the last entity that took communications seriously and now we live in hell
My grandpa used to work on these, and he passed away before I was able to ask him anything about how they worked.
Now a few of the radio sites I maintain are nestled in the bones of these monuments. I hold a particular deference for them when I'm in their shadow.

AT&T Long Lines

is one of the most monumental efforts that has zero cultural understanding

Sleep is a biological necessity, and sleep deprivation has real physical, psychological, and social consequences that need to be taken seriously. The way our society treats it as slothful to sleep according to natural rhythms (including midday naps and variant chronotypes like night owls) is evil.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

Big part of the trouble with politics these days is that "we disagree on the right solution to this problem" and "we disagree on the material reality of what the problem is and how it functions on a fundamental level" are treated as equally legitimate
I work on radio equipment as a job, we share towers with iheartradio owned stations... The amount of neglect that's often on display for the FM transmitters and antenna lines is just saddening

Look, I know people don't like the idea of killing deer. There's even a name for it: 'Bambi syndrome'.

But you *do* like native trees and forest ecosystems, right?

Well, it's one or the other.
With maybe 125,000+ invasive sika deer in Wicklow alone, this is what native forest creation looks like.

• No woodland flora can grow
• Oak aside, trees flop over once tube is removed, deer then kill tree
• Trees may not even be genuinely native

For our forests' sake, a LOT more deer must be shot.
The pocket forest of native broadleaf tree established by Scouting Ireland at it activity centre at Lough Dan was only possible by using tubes to protect the saplings from bracken & deer/sheep grazing. My image from Aug shows bracken density.
Forever vindicated for being that freak that maintains a library of music saved to a device locally
I think it's a legitimate gripe, dumb digital is ok, but I reallyyy don't like make all media internet based, having been forced to live in an area with rather unreliable Internet access for the longest time
Like, there's been transatlantic contacts on 8.76Khz but that seems to just be it?
Hm, thinking about amateur radio on the VLF and ELF bands again.
I tried this now I'm trapped in the traffic circle, it's been 10 years

100% with the quit fucking around and embrace nuclear. There are a lot more negative environmental effects that large solar farms have compared to the energy that actually is produced, and the really dire effects on power transmission that it has.
