I find myself increasingly uncharitable towards AI booster takes, approximately five to six years into this hype cycle, with a lot of harms demonstrated and no positives to show for it.

We just don't need to do this.

There's an asymmetry to the AI booster argument that I find galling, to say the least.

They don't have time, so they automate communication — but you still need to read it. They come up with a new shiny and don't bother backing it up — but you still need to spend your time refuting their […]

There are, to a broad approximation, two kinds of metaethical approaches to the world:

• I suffered, so no one else must suffer
• I suffered, so you must suffer

Guess which metaethical framework leads me to boost this?

Apropos of nothing, reminded of the extremely vague and one-percent-baked JRPG idea I had for how to take advantage of DS/3DS style dual screens. Namely have a physical-space map on one screen and a social-space map on the other. That is, have magical attacks use the social map and physical use […]

People keep writing blog posts about how wonderful it is that there's no war in Ba Sing Se and wondering why I don't find said posts particularly reassuring.

i wish journal articles would be precise in their titles. AI? no, you ran some kind of unsupervised learning. or did an agent based simulation. or used cnn and image similarity. or whatever.

I'll at least thank Simon Willison for finally saying the quiet part loud: he does value what I would consider to be the core political aim of the free and open source movements.

Please don't harass him or dog pile him, but please also don't pretend that […]

Does anyone know why geminiprotocol.net might be down? I'd hate to see the gemweb collapse... it doesn't have to be big to be fun!

If you're looking to help with Arcalibre development, it's now a bit easier to do so! The rereading/pyreading repo on Codeberg builds two Python packages that are used by Arcalibre, but that can be developed, built, and tested separately from any other Arcalibre code.

They're both Maturin-based […]

WOOT. Arcalibre runs from a wheel! ...and immediately crashes. But still!

Gah, I'm running into a question where Stack Overflow would have been perfect back in the day, but now everything is a patchwork of scattered Discord guilds instead.

Boy howdy the proliferation of AI booster discourse is a good reminder that you are not immune to propaganda. Nor am I.

Making progress towards having an Arcalibre wheel that builds and runs, but where the resulting application then fails at run-time.

Slow going, but getting there!

I swear I already was drafting this thread in my head before the PSF/Anthropic announcement, but I don't understand the endgame for AI boosters in F/OSS.

Just for the sake of argument, let me set aside the ethical problems with AI — those are huge and overriding, but I'm going somewhere with […]

@xgranade to the latter, I would be equally up in arms if this work was NOT in the context of the previous proposal that originated with Seth and Mike, but was instead something Anthropic specifically asked for.

That would look a lot more like Naomi's words of caution about a "customer" […]
