The code doesn't do anything yet, but I'm fairly happy with the project layout for troubled_waters so far. I think it makes pretty good use of `just`, `pyproject.toml`, and `uv`/`pdm`/`pipx`.

The big thing I'm not completely happy with so far is that it's not exactly configurable whether it […]

@xgranade that's the entire thesis behind facebook's investments in AI
November 29, 2025 at 9:26 PM
If we think of AI as a spam generation technology, OpenAI deploying them for in-app advertisements makes perfect sense. You don't need an ad agency writing copy for you, you just A/B test the world on incoherent ramblings until you find something that makes numbers go brrr.

Alright, I think I'm zeroing in on a good kit for making RPG references that fit well on a table. My little project started from noticing that the Fabula Ultima books are all printed in A5, and didn't take up nearly as much room on the table as D&D books in 8.5"x11" format.

So, why not make my […]

it's funny to me how nowadays all of the high-end professional controllers are making a big deal about hall-effect sensors for their analog sticks, and it's "the new hotness," when previously that was the standard for the Sega Dreamcast

So much cool stuff about that console was just ignored and […]

@xgranade you can fix this with dataclass_transform, and it’s a fine thing to do
November 28, 2025 at 8:55 PM
Of course MyPy seems to not understand keyword arguments to dataclass __init__. I'm sure there's a magic incantation I can use to make it work, but I think that in all the Python code I've written so far, I have yet to have MyPy work out of the box without needing hacks for pretty basic patterns.

I am... oddly bemused that I have seen three entirely different and seemingly independent strands of discourse about the term "USians."

I feel pretty good about this as a configuration file schema for a program that bridges between MQTT servers using a variety of different protocols (including MQTT itself). The idea would be to allow fallbacks such as mesh networking when a TCP/IP connection isn't available.

Personally, I think it's a bad thing when people in the government post AI images without disclosing that they're AI.

Apropos of nothing, remembering how unhinged and honestly kind of inspired Hasbro's MtG / Clue crossover was. Kind of had a chess-boxing feel where you can win either subgame to win the whole game, and have to keep your eyes on both wincons

Sure, you can almost see the boardroom meeting where […]

Despite being a quite different pen, I'm kind of starting to think of Pilot's Juice Up 04 as a spiritual successor to the Precise V5.

"Just because I'm not a woman doesn't make me a man."
"Those with a gender are easily swayed by appearance."
"Wait, aren't you asexual?"

Why didn't I know there was an aggressively queer anime based on the werewolf game?

[death in family (I'm OK), ai]

All this AI shit, and I still think about how when my grandmother died a year or two into COVID, the funeral was streamed on an unlisted YouTube video.

At the end, Google popped up a recommendation for "check out these awkward funerals!"

The same companies are […]

I've seen this article shared a bunch today, and hoo boy is there some shit I disagree with (no, Mr. Green, it's not our fault that "living wage" didn't inspire you, that's on you).

But the core point, that the same methodology used to derive a "poverty line" in 1963 would, if applied honestly […]

"Poker is not very left-coded" is a hell of a political take. I guess they really think none of us have any damned fun, don't they?
