Our new IMR paper on the great replacement theory is now open-access. We find that about 20% (!) of German adults believe that white majorities are being deliberately replaced by non-white immigrants in a secretive attempt by malevolent elites to undermine their own country.

🚨New paper with @frankvantubergen.bsky.social and Irena Kogan "Multidimensional Effects of Conflict-Induced Violence on Wartime Migration Decisions: Evidence from Ukraine" accepted in Journal of Peace Research 🇺🇦🕊️
yuliyakosyakova.bsky.social
Today, 24 Feb 2025, marks 3 years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of 🇺🇦—one of the largest displacement crises in modern history. I’m honored to share our new article in Journal of Peace Research (@jpeaceresearch.bsky.social) on conflict-induced violence (CIV) & wartime migration. 👇👇👇

yuliyakosyakova.bsky.social
8/8: We hope these insights inform policies and humanitarian efforts that protect civilians and address the complexities of wartime migration. Thank you for reading, and stay tuned for the full article! Preprint link here osf.io/w32fs. 🕊️ #Ukraine #WartimeMigration #HumanitarianAid

7/8🔸 Key #5: Despite severe violence, many choose internal displacement over crossing borders—a “#home bias.” Our data covers the war’s early phase; prolonged conflict could shift choices as hopes for quick resolution fade. #Ukraine #Displacement

yuliyakosyakova.bsky.social
6/8🔹 Key #4: Vulnerable groups (e.g., large families, elderly) flee more when violence escalates, shrinking usual demographic gaps in migration. Meanwhile, women with greater resources often leave early, perpetuating inequalities in escape opportunities.

yuliyakosyakova.bsky.social
5/8🔸 Key #3: Forewarnings & indirect threats often prompt flight more than direct attacks, which can trap people. Destruction of critical infrastructure, remote violence, battles, & fatalities raise outmigration. Occupied territories & severed comms reduce it by limiting escape.

yuliyakosyakova.bsky.social
4/8🔹 Key #2: Proximity matters. IImmediate threats strongly push people to leave; forewarnings and indirect threats can trigger migration more than direct attacks.

yuliyakosyakova.bsky.social
3/8🔸 Key #1: A curvilinear relationship between CIV and migration. Initial violence spurs flight, but beyond a certain threshold, this effect declines, potentially even reversing under extreme conditions

yuliyakosyakova.bsky.social
2/8 By including movers & stayers, we tackle “mobility bias.” Our OneUA survey of 24k 🇺🇦 women shows how the intensity, proximity, & type of CIV drive or deter relocation—both within Ukraine & internationally.

1/8 Title “Multidimensional Effects of Conflict-Induced Violence on Wartime Migration Decisions: Evidence from Ukraine” (doi: 10.1177/00223433251317838). We examine how CIV shapes Ukrainian women’s choices: stay, move internally, or flee abroad.
