🖋️ If my characters never failed, they’d be boring. Struggle makes the story. If Lucia didn’t wrestle with self-worth or Matteo didn’t fight for his independence, their arcs wouldn’t matter. Growth is messy, and that’s what I love to write.

Body i. by EM Harding I find her as I'm taking up the carpet, beneath the loose floorboards I am trying to restore. She's a dirty rag, faded pink fleece and tattered polyester, hiding the absence of all that is gone: her eyes her lungs her heart her view her voice her laughter The bones scream at me and I scream back because I have never liked being perceived I think she did once, though. I think she liked to play tag and be chased, and skin her knees I think she liked to jabber with crows sitting in park trees I think she once really tried to do a handstand and sprained her wrist I think she died the day she realised her meaning would always be missed. I think she loved playing pretend by herself on a swing I think the reason she hated spiders was the sensation on her skin and I think she was braver than I'll ever be, as I put the floorboards back and bury the memory. Friends to Lovers Used to Be My Favourite Trope by EM Harding My second kiss happened approximately 30 seconds after my first and I should have known I loved you then. Because if I'm gonna be real, (I'm sorry, first kiss, look away) all I could think during my first kiss was, ugh this is gross. There was a weird taste in my mouth and it was wet and sticky for some reason, and it felt more like a favour than an event. And for a moment I thought I might be ace because I read a Johnlock fanfic once where all Sherlock could think about was the texture of teeth. But then I kissed you moments later (thanks, spin the bottle) and I swear you must have rubbed your socks against the carpet because SPARKS. And I should have known I loved you then or about a dozen times after, when kissing was about a hundred thousand times simpler than speech. I'm Gonna Need You to Repeat That by EM Harding The poem is written as a solid block of text. Each sentence runs vertically rather than horizontally. The further into the poem you go, the more difficult it is to find the whole sentence, mimicking how hard it is to hear everything all at once. In the center of the block of text is a clearing, in which the words "your lovely face" are written as a focal point. The block of text around it reads as follows: The table next to us are having a fight over whether it's okay to use their hypothetical private jet in the future. Someone has ordered a coffee at the bar and the espresso machine is shrieking like a toddler who's been denied MilkyWay Stars. You'd think in places like these they'd mute the television but no instead the crowd goes wild here and ninety-nine miles away. Two lads are playing pool around the corner not many balls clacking mostly the thud-thud of cues against velvet. I think I hear you say something you're laughing I laugh to save the sound from loneliness. The till springs open with a thunder crash of coins leaping out of their confinement and skittering across the floor like mice. A girl changes the music to ACDC and her boyfriend yells YEEAAHHH and tries to start a mosh pit. My ears are ringing from every sound it hurts it hurts. Rain is falling on shingles. Hoarder by EM Harding Some losses don't feel like mine to grieve the tissues aren't for me instead I have bin bags and boxes parcel tape and a room and time enough to pack up someone else's whole world. But when the shelves are empty and the carpets are clean it's hard not to hear the pipes aching inside the walls.
