Greetings. I'm Jack, also known as Zealous Alchemy. I'm an artist and xylographer (fancy term for woodcut printmaker).

My work is inspired by my scattershot of interests including: history, film, gaming, anime, and manga.

I also have an obsession with country music, for reasons unbeknown to me.
I only work with wood, the reason I picked up printmaking was to focus specifically on a single medium. Grain is interesting. Cutting against the grain can cause tearing, especially with a gouge. However cutting with the grain has its own quirks; it cuts too easily at times so you can overshoot.

Really tough to get a good video, as I normally have my nose pressed to the block, and I turn the block often to get the right approach angle.

I just put in the outline cuts, try and push the waste wood out, and then trim any stubborn strands.
Carving the end of every line with a knife to get a sharper finish. It's mind numbing and taking forever, but I didn't want the curved ends you get from using a gouge.

Probably have ~100 more to carve, and then it's finished.

Their company address being a PO Box in Dubai is just the cherry on top of this absolute shit show.
Probably the hardest part of the design to carve. I didn't use a ruler to carve these lines, as I wanted the inevitable wobbles and minor wonkiness to show in the final prints.

Saw the new Chainsaw Man at the Leicester Square IMAX. The screen is obnoxiously big - 26.5m wide!

The film was outstandin. I just can't get enough of the over the top nonsense Fujimoto cooks up.

Saw this legendary van today in London.

The only picture I took from the market today in Colchester, just before I set up the dreaded sticker rack.

We were crammed in like sardines, but it was a fun market!

Next up is London Film & Comic Con in November, then I've got 5 more local markets days in late Nov/Dec.

Halfway through Ken Burns' ~15hr Vietnam War doc.

Being English, the only exposure I've had to Vietnam is watching old war movies; so this series is enlightening.

Burns' series on the ACW and Country Music are both fantastic, and this one is of the same calibre.

I think this is ready for carving now...

I don't know if carving this is going to work out, but you have to keep pushing the limits of the craft to get anywhere meaningful.

All I ever see from country fans online is endless discourse over what "real" country is. Every artist puts out a song about how things aren't the same way as they once were; I think it's always been like this.

Nostalgia for something that never existed.

I got tired of seeing nothing but heroic looking depictions of the Gundam, and it had been a while since I drew the Gundam, so I drew this.

Amuro is a terrified child with PTSD that worsens with every day he is forced to stay on the battlefield as the Gundam's pilot.
They're manufactured by a UK company called TN Lawrence.
My gouges are mostly Pfeil, they are fairly popular in the UK/EU. They make a world of difference Vs a bargain pack of gouges!
