How I heard the story of the tech industry’s obsession with “meritocracy”, it stemmed from investment banker types laughing tech people out of rooms in the 90s as weird nerds.
And they felt they too should be rich because they are “smart” and thus “deserve”

One thing about being in my 40s & being fully comfortable in my own skin: I'm repulsed by any suggestion to "play the game" and basically be someone I'm not, for the sake of getting ahead professionally.
