Avoiding escalation was not essential. It only encouraged Russia to escalate more.

The entire war could have been avoided had the US or Nato signalled Putin that they were ready to intervene.
Stoltenberg described ending the call as “extremely painful,” fearing it could be Zelensky’s last, but said avoiding escalation was essential.

He added that U.S. President Joe Biden agreed, saying the United States would not risk World War III for Ukraine.

So there’s a website called Deer Of St Nicholas which posts Christmas wish letters from Ukrainian children who had their childhood stolen by the war, anyone can pick a child and get them their present and it’s that time of the year again to achingly scroll it for hours again

I wrote a couple of articles juxtaposing my experiences as a Ruby developer with my life as a Ukrainian surviving the war (still trying to find insights for development practices in it).

Got a fair bunch of "why politics again :roll-eye-emoji:" comments (not all of them, thankfully).
"The better Ruby Discord. Ruby is about developer joy, not divisive political views. The sooner we purge politics from FOSS the better."

Saw this quote tweet today, For some of us, our lives and ability to exist _are_ those divisive political views mentioned.

Hi Americans your president is siding with a war criminal and threatening Ukrainians with annihilation if they fight back, just fyi, if that even bothers someone

I think no movie shows better the harsh and brutal reality of the war in Ukraine than "2000 Meters to Andriivka". I saw it earlier this evening and it left me pretty shaken.

I hope it will reach many people, as it seems that these days the world has mostly forgotten about the war and Ukraine.

Tonight I got to see another great documentary - "My Dear Theo" (www.imdb.com/title/tt3589...). It tells the story of the director and her unit on the front lines in Ukraine in 2022. Very powerful and touching movie!

It was also really great to meet Alisa in person and discuss the movie with her.

The last naturally looking post on this account, or reply from it, was back in 2023. I don't know which possibility is funnier:
1. it was always fake
2. it was stolen
3. it was willingly given as an ad board
4. this is real Matz using Bsky as a side hustle

("my GitHub sponsor" implies (4) but IDK)

After listening to about a dozen first-hand accounts, I’ve published what I know about the RubyGems takeover.

Ruby Central recently took over a collection of open source projects from their maintainers without their consent.

Dear europeans, ready or not World War III is already underway and russia with their allies are attacking EU.

So why don't you see it (yet)?

TLDR: because you don't know what the war is like (I did ask).

Let's see what it really is and what you can do about it.

I have followers with wide reaches. Can someone intervene with @support.bsky.team to reinstate @reshetz.bsky.social? She's a Ukrainian who reports on the war who was banned due to mass reports after posting a screenshot from russian media that advocated genocide of Ukrainians. I posted the same one:

You have suspended a prominent Ukrainian account, one of the very few that is covering daily russian attacks, as a result of report bombing.

Please unban Mira of Kyiv @reshetz.bsky.social

1. a person in my feed retweets somebody with hammer-and-sickle emoji in their screenname (with Spotify-critical tweet that mentions communism)
2. I open a profile of that somebody
3. "black sun of Azov batallion flag is not ok" is one of their recent posts.

What else did I expect?

Most of the internet used to be like this. This is actually the default, it took companies enclosing the internet and adding weird, soul-killing incentives to make people behave the way they do now. In a way, there is truly nothing special about Wikipedia except that it survived longer.
“Wikipedia is this economic anomaly. In many ways, it’s sort of magical that people will just volunteer without explicit economic incentives to create artifacts that are meant to share knowledge with everyone in the world”
