Farmers (are expected to) fulfil diverse economic, environmental, and social roles or functions. Yet the relative importance of these functions remains contested both within farming communities and in the broader society. Understanding how farmers prioritize these different functions as a reflection of their role identity is crucial, given the increasing recognition of the importance of identity as a determinant of farmer behaviour. We frame this aspect of farmer identity in terms of multifunctionality, a common lens for analysing the performance of agriculture relative to societal demands. However, while this concept is often used with an ecological focus, our study builds on a broader interpretation that encompasses the full range of social, cultural, economic, and ecological functions. Furthermore, we focus on the roles farmers themselves would like to play when looking 10 to 20 years into the future. We apply Q methodology to see how farmers from Eastern Germany prioritize among 71 societal functions. We use the Q sorts and qualitative data to derive and characterize a typology of three narrative perspectives. The results demonstrate the breadth and heterogeneity of farmers' role identity, and therefore the need to go beyond a narrow focus on ecological roles or functions.

It's time to say Farvel today. I've had a great time at the Department of Food and Resource Economics (IFRO), University of Copenhagen. I'll miss the colleagues, the cycling infrastructure, the green spaces. Still, I'm really looking forward to seeing my family again. 5+ weeks is a lot.

Fun activity during my goodbye-cake break at IFRO: trying to "carbon-date" this map of Europe. We narrowed it down to probably early 60's, using mainly non-European hints (Egypt is called "United Arab Republic", Algeria is independent, Gaza is still controlled by Egypt).

Not sure this is quite what I meant (though also a good, distinct(?) point). I was thinking of e.g. university admins introducing restrictive rules because someone has misused some "loophole", which make many other things much more complicated. Or social services and politicians worrying about…

Es ist wirklich absurd. Nicht nur, dass das #EU Parlament mehrheitlich dafür stimmt, Fleischersatz nicht mehr #Burger, #Schnitzel und #Wurst nennen zu dürfen.

I feel like too often administrations/bureaucracies (not only, but especially) act like "Oh, shit, there is one way how X can be misused, let's make X impossible", while ignoring that "X can be helpful in 1000 other cases" also holds true. It drives me mad.

Ich habe vor einer Weile ihr "Strangers in Their Own Land" gelesen und fand es stellenweise faszinierend (und erschreckend). Die Parallelen zu DE hielten sich m. E. in Grenzen, weil die (politische) US-Kultur etwas sehr eigenartiges ist... Aber vielleicht ist es bei diesem Buch anders.

Meine Regel ist, dass ich keine Texte lese, die mir versuchen zu erklären, dass „Kapitalismus“ schlecht oder gut oder rosa ist🤷 Ich finde den Begriff in den meisten Kontexten nicht hilfreich; am Ende geht’s um etwas relativ Spezifisches, aber dann sollte es bitte auch so benannt werden.

Sprachunterricht in der Schule ist nach meiner Erfahrung nicht wirklich die Lösung… Mit jeder Sprache, die man schon spricht, wird es auf jeden Fall leichter, und da ich bei Deutsch keine Wahl hatte, war Englisch (und die Sprachen, die ich seitdem gelernt habe) dann halb so schlimm😉

Danke! Aufgrund meiner recht englischlastigen Arbeit finde ich Philosophie auf Englisch im Zweifel leichter als Romane in dieser Sprache😁 Aber ich lese generell regelmäßig Bücher auf Deutsch, Polnisch und Englisch, ohne da groß zu unterscheiden.
