Thank *you*! I have a very amateur obsession with Roman Britain.

I read Echolands recently - I very enjoyed it very much
There are some fantastic carnyx recordings out there, particularly by John Kenny& more recently by the brilliant Letty Stott if you search for them. They also get brief (ahead of curve!) mentions in my book about the archaeology of Boudica’s rebellion #Echolands - A Journey in Search of Boudica

Starmer has been very canny. He has not given USA any support for actions in Venezuela and arranged a coalition to show fulsome support for the sovereignty of Greenland.

At the same time he has kept USA on board in the Ukraine war.

Not bad statesmanship.

When the global order/stability is under threat you’d like to think our Parliament would put aside their differences, come together and show a united front. I’d have thought that’s what most citizens of the UK would want.

Wouldn’t it be reassuring if all Parties were on the same page at this time

Populists criticise, tear down, point out what’s wrong, wind people up & make them angry. They’re ‘personality’ on steroids.

Leaders build. They build confidence, stability, trust, relationships and hope. They’re reflective, sometimes a bit boring.

Trump, Farage, Robinson and Polanski sit where?

Starmer looks so isolated and Trump didn't call 🤣
Meanwhile he’s quietly rebuilding alliances, calming markets, and getting Britain taken seriously again. The press and right-wing commentariat don’t do strategy - just vibes, panic, and yesterday’s talking points. Another blinder played by Keir.

Please support me as I walk 50 miles in January for DementiaUK in memory of my Dad. Nearly £600 raised so far - hoping for £750 and then £1000!

Hi there, This month, I’m walking 50 Miles for Dementia UK – a cause close to my heart. Just £10 could pay for the telephone costs of two families calling its free Dementia Helpline, so any sup...

Absolutely; a sensible position
Starmer has made a statement - not involved; not forewarned or briefed by the Whitehouse; needs to talk to Trump before passing judgment. A sensible position. Should the UK be offended we were not forewarned? Probably best we were not in the grand scheme of things www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Keir Starmer says UK 'not involved in any way' in US strike on Venezuela
The PM has not spoken to US President Donald Trump about the US seizure of President Nicolas Maduro.

From today, the NHS will offer free chickenpox vaccinations as part of its routine childhood immunisation programme.

This will keep more children well and in school, protecting them from a disease that can be serious, and reduce the time parents take off work to care for them.

Happy NY! I hope you're right.

2026.

The year that, if you want to see Reform defeated once and for all, you get behind our Labour government and promote the work they are doing to repair and rebuild our country.

You either do this to defeat Reform. Or you chose another path and help them to power.

Seems VAT on private school fees delivers £1.4bn considerably more than estimated. IPaper reports today. That’s great news. Thanks Rachel. More money for the 93% of kids attending State Schools.

Vote Reform..?

Tory incompetents and charlatans destroyed the country.

And yet it's Starmer, decent, diligent, dedicated, that is hated by both left and right.

Beats me.

I've largely given up on the Grainiad's political coverage. Poor. I certainly don't support the rag financially any longer.
"woo MPs" is such a strange way of framing efforts to cut the cost of living. Cutting the cost of living for those struggling should be the aim of every Government. To suggest that such an aim exists only to serve back bench management, is indicative of Westminster bubble journalism.

What do 2009 and 2025 have in common?

2025 was the best year for the FTSE 100 since 2009.

2025 was also the first FULL year under a Labour government since 2009.

Coincidence? Maybe. But it's not as if it's the only data point showing improving trends now we have a Labour government again.

There's no comparison between this government and what went before and what might come again.
Mistakes? There'll be some. Nobody sensible will claim that governing is easy, not least when there is a 14-year backlog of neglect.
But we've embarked on a renewed Britain.
I wish PM Starmer well in 2026.

I agree
Glad this is being covered - I really don’t understand the unpopularity. I’d say Starmer is doing a decent job. What is different there is a network of social media - bots that amplify extreme right and left views. Funded by Russia but also right wing groups and billionaires.

All true, but you are missing the point about the glittering prize open to TM if she had displayed political nous

By 'Labour' you mean 'Corbyn'. The perfect enemy for May - if she had had political sense she could have taken advantage of opposition weakness to build consensus behind her deal.

Instead of building consensus in the country, May went out of her way to alienate Remainers like me: 'Brexit is Brexit', 'Citizens of Nowhere' and made zero effort to sell her deal. An utter failure of leadership.
