NEW! #FirstLastAnything Episode 34: As a big fan of the album Pearlies by Emma Anderson (@emmaandersonmusic.bsky.social), I was delighted that Emma joined me on my music textcast to discuss it, her career in Lush and Sing-Sing, and some favourite recordings. firstlastanything.co.uk/2025/11/23/f...
FLA 34: Emma Anderson (23/11/2025)
As a first-year university student, one of the first songs of the 1990s I cherished was ‘De-Luxe’ by the London-based quartet Lush, who were signed to the independent record label 4AD. I was in the…

Said it earlier but: any Beatles record in December is a Christmas record.

The intro of Let's Dance is pretty much Twist and Shout.

Finally got it to work. You can now transfer this to the streaming platform of your choice. #ChristmasInContext 1960-2020 www.tunemymusic.com/share/k1ji1C...

I wonder if this will push it up the rankings a bit!

Kelly Clarkson's Underneath the Tree, although that's about 12 years old now.

There's a bit of Telstar by the Tornados that almost turns into a bit of White Christmas. #ChristmasInContext
Anyway. I made this several years ago. Stuff That Got High in the Charts At Christmas That Isn't About Christmas. (I cannot get TuneMyMusic to convert this at the moment, and I don't understand why.) #ChristmasInContext 1960-2020 open.spotify.com/playlist/5On...

They used to integrate Latest Flame when they did it live. In fact it's on Rank, the live LP!

My new archival assemblage is ready for its close up. It marks 20 years since the death of Derek Bailey and debuts at the Barbican on 14 Dec (supported by The Wire). The details of featured artists is now online and below. Book once, book often, right here: www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/202...

I think this is why we have that association - because they weren't Christmas but they were still part of it anyway.

Actually, I think part of the problem is that there are too many new Christmas songs, for the sake of it, it seems. And the vast majority aren't terribly memorable. To make the song special in itself should be paramount.

Funnily enough, I just posted this a few minutes ago! open.spotify.com/playlist/5On...

I think not having a big family anymore is affecting my view on this too...

I believe you two have just sewn-up the Xmas single discourse.

I think this is why I find Christmas a bit much now. (Sorry, being a grouch.) It is overwhelmingly too Christmas. If that makes sense.

#np Don't Worry by Kim Appleby. The best thing anyone in Bros ever helped to write.

A Beatles single in December is in itself a Christmas present, right?

Is anyone else having trouble converting a playlist from Spotify to TuneMyMusic? I'm getting an error message and 'Does not recognise URL'. It's only been happening this past week. Puzzler.

That 12" version which takes forever to start, but which is all the more exciting for it. And also the gorgeous other side, Do I Have To?

My new novel Drum is now available to pre-order as a Kindle. You can't pre-order the pb but they are both out on Jan 1st. Like most people I've had to raise my prices v slightly but I hope you will think my endeavours worthy of the price of a couple of trendy coffees.

What a lovely thing to write - thank you so much, Robert!

The only time of year when anyone seems to be interested in what's number one, and it's very tedious now.

🚨Some personal news.

I'm thrilled to announce that I've just filed my first copy for The New Yorker.

Always on My Mind - is it a Christmas record or not? I can't decide, but I tend to think it is.

eg Christmas Day 1988. I love that Buffalo Stance and Good Life and Stop! by Erasure were in the top ten at Christmas.

I know this is a grouch opinion, but one thing I used to like about Christmas in pop was that only some of the records were about Christmas. There was real range in the top ten, and even non-seasonal Christmas hits had some magic about them.
