Excerpt from my FFXIV first person POV fic "Dark Concerto" where Amon is breaking down over the fate of his soon-to-fall empire and his deathtouched Emperor. "Suddenly the resolute and pragmatic Allagan scientist who accomplishes anything he sets his mind to with aplomb is gone – vanished in the face of the cold brutality of inescapable death. That is what drives me to this unique madness I find myself in now. It is such a strange feeling, so very much unlike me and who I always have been. A surge of realization reaches me, bone-chilling like an eerie reflection of watchful eyes upon a gravestone, haunting and surreal and unfiltered. Even with all this knowledge I’ve amassed - it is still not enough. Helpless am I to stop this tragedy to befall our empire. Oh woe, it pains me so just thinking about it. And now I am to face losing you and everything that I’ve worked so hard for… My body is numb, my mouth is dry, my fingers are tingling, my chest aches unbearably so. I refuse to accept this reality with every fiber of my being! My mind races out of sheer desperation to formulate a solution. I’ve lost count of how much time has passed now – deliberating for hours and hours on end, sifting through all possible outcomes. My entire study is upturned in a frantic search. It only fills me with more misery. I even find myself betwixt moments of uncharacteristic bargaining, distraught pleading, “Why couldn’t it have been me instead and not you?! Not the Allag we’ve worked so tirelessly to remedy—“ I can’t lose you. Isn’t there any way to prevent this? I can’t allow this to stop me! So then, why can’t I… why…"
