In my experience AI enthusiasts are the same mediocre work shy hangers on that have always poisoned game development but now they're much easier to spot

Any time you see a quadrilateral in engineering, you're probably looking at something aesthetically appealing rather than optimal.

My "No Graphics API" blog post is live! Please repost :)

I spend 1.5 years doing this. Full rewrite last summer and another partial rewrite last month. As Hemingway said: "First draft of everything is always shit".
No Graphics API — Sebastian Aaltonen
Graphics APIs and shader languages have significantly increased in complexity over the past decade. It’s time to start discussing how to strip down the abstractions to simplify development, improve pe...

This is pretty close to perfect. I'd happily bin mobile GPUs and TBR but I understand why they're included. I probably would've binned hardware rasterisation altogether though and that would've been a mistake.

Unfortunately he makes the same mistake that basically everyone does. He's ignored the word immersive in the definition. It's not just a simulation, it's a simulation in service of immersion.

It's perverse lawcraft but Disney signed that Open AI deal to create a market that they can use to counter Google's fair use defence in their court case.

Tl;DR support critics if you hate advertising and don't support advertising if you are a critic, advertising is the antithesis of criticism and will always seek to eliminate it.
I'm going to throw some cold water on the anger about this.

It is now considered ROUTINE for AAA games to spend as much on marketing as they do on Dev. Dev costs $200M? That's the starting point of conversation on how much to spend on marketing, PR and ads.

It took Americans to really unlock the potential of warhammer and judge dread because the British establishment is deeply terrified of that anti imperialist part of English culture. Total War 40k is gonna be banging

Casey Hudson directing a game doesn't quite carry the same weight after Anthem, hope they pull it off but i'm not holding my breath tbh, I don't think he understands what made kotor great.

Lots of other AAA games have budgets in this range, what's unique here is that Sandfall are the only ones telling the truth.
"Sandfall wanted to prove that indie studios were capable of making prestige games at a fraction of the budget and personnel of larger studios....

"Sandfall, which said the budget for Clair Obscur was less than $10 million..."

Wow

Crowd sourced reviews are a terrible idea and them carrying weight makes games worse but the solution isn't to let devs remove the negative poorly written, pointless and bigoted ones but keep the positive poorly written, pointless (probably not bigoted tbh because that's not how bigots work) ones

Playing Doom The Dark Ages and it's got the same problem as Doom Eternal, massively over-designed. It's like they didn't read the reviews for Doom 2016. It was widely praised for getting out of your way.

I'm not particularly interested in the fantasy of unregulated speech and I do think this game could've made it's point without the paedophilia but this was a thought provoking read. I think it's fine that this game exists on gog and gog alone www.rockpapershotgun.com/horses-review

When you deliberately make bad things that sell a lot, you're ensuring it's success or failure rests on factors you can't control, the main one being that something actually good will come along and draw those fickle eyeballs www.eurogamer.net/call-of-duty...

DRAM is extremely cheap to manufacture but it's been controlled by a price fixing cartel for decades, at some point that cartel makes a mistake when planning the manufacturing volume and you get economic shocks, that's a big part of why cartels are illegal
