This afternoon 5/2/26, MPs are debating Road Safety. Wales won a 25% reduction in casualties from its national 20mph limit, so please forward this to your MP for discussion. Transport professionals say why it needs a national policy in England, just like Wales or Scotland. See how in the comments.

See first comment: why the previous “Setting Local Speed Limits” guidance is no longer relevant or fit for purpose, and how English highway authorities could adopt the Safe System approach to urban/village speed limits.

Yet another report calls for a national urban/village default speed limit of 20mph. This time its from the Faculty of Public Health, Transport and Health Science Group and the Royal Society for Public Health. See action No. 5

It's great to see this reference to the success of 20mph limits on page 26 of the TfL 2026 Business Plan.

Welsh Government has just released road casualty stats for the Jul-Sep 2025 qtr. For urban/village 20/30mph casualties are 33% lower (420) than the same qtr in 2023 (627) before the default 20mph limit was set. More evidence that default 20mph is a life-enhancing and life-saving initiative.

20's Plenty and it could deliver 20% of the UK Gov's 10-year target of a 65% reduction in casualties in just 20 months.
January 8, 2026 at 8:25 AM
The new UK Road Safety Strategy with its target of a 65% reduction in casualties and mandating of a Safe System approach, marks the beginning of the end for the national 30mph speed limit. It's no longer credible when its been rejected by all Welsh and Scottish and 55% of English authorities.

Good to see the roll-out of 20mph limits as a default in Glasgow.
January 5, 2026 at 8:59 AM
All the evidence is clear, that lower speeds that protect road users are a key element in any Safe System approach to road safety. And any Road Safety Strategy cannot ignore the requirement for 20mph or 30km/h as an urban/village norm or default. We forward to increasing 20mph adoption in 2026.

A New Year resolution for any transport authority should be Resolution 11 of the Stockholm Declaration on Road Safety. Any Road Safety Strategy with 30mph as an urban/village norm will grossly underperform in protecting against death/injury compared to 20mph. www.20splenty.org/wales_casual...

On 28th Nov 2025 Lillian Greenwood said in Parliament that she intends to publish the new Road Safety Strategy "this year". Rather like Vision Zero as an "aspiration", "intentions" don't save lives. We look forward to it's publication. Meanwhile 5 a day die on UK roads. #timefor20

Whether you look at the Welsh Nation, Scottish or English towns, cities and villages or in continental Europe, 20mph/30km/h limits reduce casualties, noise, stress and create healthier streets. Its time to set it as an urban/village default and only increase where evidentially justified.
December 22, 2025 at 11:29 AM
The objectives of a default 20mph were explained very well by this Welsh Assembly Member in 2018. And its great to see that since implementing 20mph as the default for urban, built-up areas there have been over 1,000 fewer casualties on those roads.

The latest IAM RoadSmart survey finds that more drivers support (42%) a "20mph speed limit like Wales" than oppose (39%) one. England needs to align with Wales and Scotland by setting 20mph as an urban/village norm. See page 95 of their report at www.mynewsdesk.com/uk/iam-roads...

This Christmas millions of children will get presents they can wheel, scoot or ride to school and around their community. It is an inescapable fact that 30mph motor speeds on community roads will kill and maim some of them. UK Gov should give children the gift they need - a national default 20

Does your police not enforce 20mph? Then show them how others are protecting the most vulnerable road users by enforcing the 20mph limits set to protect them. See how Avon & Somerset Police enforce 20mph limits across Bristol. www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/request/spee...

Will today, 14th Dec 2025, be the last day of a UK Gov 15-year era when it has had no English Road Safety Strategy. Whilst other UK nations have moved forward with their own RSS and the acceptance of 20mph as a transformational norm for communities, England is still locked in a postcode lottery.
December 14, 2025 at 11:44 AM
In the 1st year of implementing a national 20mph urban/village default limit in Wales there were 630 fewer casualties. None may have been your son or daughter, but they all belonged to someone whose life has not now been devastated. #20splenty where people are. www.20splenty.org/wales_casual...

If you want to improve productivity then you certainly don't want to arbitrarily kill or maim people on roads. Its a huge cost to society. 20mph/30kmh hardly impacts journey times in real world traffic and makes urban/village roads far more attractive for healthy walking and cycling.

If 20's Plenty had an advent calendar then it would only need just one day in it, the 20th. You might say "well what's the fun in that" but 20's Plenty as an urban/village default is an initiative brings gifts to the whole community all the year road. #20splenty

Ambulances are a good thing aren't they? Saving lives, etc. But they are very expensive. So why waste them on the 15,000 casualties on England's 30mph roads which could be avoided if UK Gov followed Wales/ Scotland by setting 20mph as an urban/village norm.www.20splenty.org/gb2024stats

Please, don’t think of speed as one of the "suspects" to be ticked off or otherwise in a collision investigation. Speed is always implicated in the turning of a hazard, into an incident, into a collision and into a casualty. It is never an "innocent bystander". It's why #20splenty where people are
