On this day in 1782, Superintendent of Finance Robert Morris addressed the US Congress to recommend establishment of a decimal coinage. Which kind of freaks me out, given that I was alive in 1971 when the UK finally got round to decimalisation.

Such attitudes predate the perceived option of replacing “unskilled” jobs with AI. Just think back to Nigel Farage reaching for “low-grade bank clerk” as the worst possible insult he could imagine or US Republicans trying to shame AOC as a former waitress. It’s really about hierarchy, not tech.

When I was a kid in the 60s we had an electric heater with louvres. It always reminded me of a Dalek’s … er … neck.
Coming back to a cold house one Xmas, v. young me sat resting my back on one of those things & nearly set fire to myself. Mum had to patch the big scorch mark on the back of my coat…
