I made the (understandable, but wrong) assumption that these awards were restricted to professional book publishing. However, plenty of good writing never becomes popular enough because of the niche nature of making writing marketable. There’s so much out there that will never see print.

The BBC, for example, now as matter of some regularity in its news reporting, maligns trans women by editing copy to deliberately include an inaccurate and demeaning slur of ‘biological male’. (Archives of articles that have been rewritten to included the inaccurate and demeaning description.)

There would seem to be similar reasons for biologists to widen this study to the treatment of other social groupings who are denigrated for being different, often using incredibly spurious or actually pseudo-scientific grounds.

Disability; mental illness; LGBT; intersex; neurodiversity…

It’s horrifying for what it might mean for the harmony of multicultural Australia. It’s too early to tell, but this attack seems more calculatedly vicious than what happened in April 96.
