i think opponents of trump also have to resist the temptation of intellectualizing his outbursts or attributing them to some recognizable goal. the fact is that trump is obsessed with greenland because it is big on a map. he wants canada because it is also big on a map. that's it.

Especially as someone who doesn't think about sports, this was a great analogy.
The analogy I always think of is to pick whichever major sport you follow the least - NASCAR, soccer, MLB, NFL, whatever - and then think about somebody who pays as much attention to politics as you pay to that.

and the reason this is important is that politics have not stopped happening. trump is set to squander whatever goodwill he has with the voting public and this is an opportunity
incredible number of you do not seem to understand the difference between trump’s base and the marginal trump voter, i.e. “the people who gave trump the win.”

resolved: people who insist that all social media sites must be places where users are constantly encountering and arguing with people over fundamental disagreement do so because their actual, real lives are echo chambers where they do not encounter any meaningful difference from day-to-day.
