NEW: Air Force jets are doing ICE flights to Africa with transponders turned off, making them nearly un-trackable.

This includes the third-country removal to Ghana and another secret flight. We figured out where it landed.

From me for @rollingstone.com:

ICE Is Deporting People to Africa on Nearly Un-Trackable Military Flights
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is deporting people to African countries like Ghana on military flights that are nearly un-trackable.

We analyzed open source ADS-B data which leaves out countless other military aircraft that fly over D.C with their transponders off for reasons of "national security." Still, with the data we had available we could drill down into which neighborhoods are seeing the most change.

Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department’s officer count alone already puts D.C. ahead of any other large city in the United States per capita. Including the additional federal officials means there’s currently one officer for every 100 residents in D.C. www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...

NEW: The Census Bureau is planning to scale back its Survey of Income and Program Participation — which is used to measure use of SNAP food assistance and other government programs — and start using "non-survey data" to lower costs, according to a budget document
www.commerce.gov/sites/defaul...
Current Demographic Statistics: The Census Bureau is making a pivotal change by developing alternate ways to deliver estimates currently provided by the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP). The data are used to estimate eligibility, use, future costs, and coverage for government programs, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and to provide improved statistics on the distribution of income in the country. The Census Bureau is transitioning to a more effective approach that merges modern survey techniques with advanced data science methods. This innovative strategy will allow the Census Bureau to focus on a smaller, more targeted sample while utilizing non-survey data to lower costs, lessen the burden on respondents, and enhance both the timeliness and accuracy of statistical outputs. The Census Bureau plans to streamline the collection to deliver the critical, legally mandated socio-economic and demographic data traditionally provided in the SIPP. While SIPP has played an important role in shedding light on the economic well-being of Americans, its data collection has been expensive and challenging for respondents. This new approach plans to deliver crucial insights more efficiently and effectively, ultimately benefiting both the Census Bureau and the public. For more information, see CEN-19.

Thanks for clarifying. Will the cartographic section be okay?
abtran.bsky.social
The National Archives had a message yesterday that their College Park facility would become restricted-access. This would be a horrible. We visited often last year to research Indian Boarding schools and the cartographic staff were so helpful. I saw hundreds of citizens getting help looking up docs.

💥 HUGE news: Today, our Washington Post colleagues announced @wapotechguild. With a majority of over 300 tech workers signing cards in support, they’re seeking voluntary recognition.
To: Washington Post management
From: [Your Name]

We’re standing together to support The Post’s tech workers as they form the Washington Post Tech Guild to fix it.

On April 7, a majority of over 300 technology workers at The Washington Post announced the formation of The Washington Post Tech Guild, a step they are taking to build a more equitable, transparent, and sustainable future for all tech workers at The Post.

Around the world, The Washington Post has earned a reputation for being a news organization that holds the powerful to account. Every day, the technologists who power The Post innovate, develop and maintain tools and systems that benefit this world class journalism. Members of the Washington Post Tech Guild should be offered equity and inclusion, a seat at the table, fair compensation and benefits, job security, just cause protections, and flexibility and modern work practices.

I hope you will recognize their union voluntarily and urge you to do so. These workers deserve the same fairness, transparency and respect that readers expect from The Post.
