Seconded, so so fully. I did this back in Grad school with a few folks who were key to my dissertation, & am still connected to a couple of them. & the messages like this I've received over the years have been incredibly affirming.
You can do this right now:

Think of a person who wrote a paper you love, whose work influenced or helped you, or has made your professional life better.

Search up their email address. Shoot them a quick email of thanks. It means so, so much. This is a rough time of year, share some joy.

i’m in a very long, slow, dramatic period of change right now, and it’s good, but so uncomfortable. i try to remind myself that it’s not always like this, that this IS a period of transition, it’s just taking a long while.

One argument I used to make to my students about why it was important to learn history (and historical thinking) is that someone was always going to be trying to tell you things were natural or had always been this way and that you needed to be able to see that as an exercise of power.

There’s no bad advice in this 🧵.

I’d add, “it’s easy to miss so much of what came before you arrived. Assume the debates, worries, thrills you have, have all happened before. If you can, try to make real connections to those who are memory-keepers. Most who have survived & stayed want to share.”
I was recently asked how I got into indie games and doing cool shit with @plusoneexp.bsky.social.

It felt weird saying, "I was an idiot on the Internet and it worked out this way."

So allow me, if you don't mind, to share some advice on replicating parts of my journey into ✨The TTRPG Space✨

OTEs! good! good feedback! all positive comments, which isn’t a requirement but i am so happy to see! multiple comments on students liking or appreciating the zine assignment! ratings on par with the FYW program’s averages, some slightly below and some above! yay 💜

one of the minor frustrations of the 2020s internet is how many sites now don't respect boolean commands in search, like they'd rather give you a bunch of unrelated content to sift through than turn up only a handful of results

yesterday was the last class meeting of the quarter and i didn’t get emotional during class but i did tear up a bit later while reading their exit tickets. such a wonderful bunch. and also im just so glad that teaching is as wonderful and meaningful to me as i have always felt it would be.

i think it comes from the things i had to learn to deal with my adhd. before and still after medication because to me at least my adhd is profound. i had to learn how to make it as easy as possible to do the correct thing.

i love teaching first year writing, i really, really, truly do!!!! and also oh my god, i want to teach creative writing so bad. i mourn the fact that i have to have a published book to be trusted to teach it here all the time.

everything else aside. the absolute best barometer of How I’m Doing continues to be the state of my room. the messier it is, the more i’m probably working myself into knots about stuff, regardless of what’s happening around me 😭
