Library Clerk and geek of many stripes (comics, board games, anime, manga, fairy tales, etc). Nerdy enough to watch anime. Old enough to not give a damn if someone calls them "Japanese cartoons".
Continuing my watch of various animated obscurities. This time, Ub Iwerks's "Willie Whopper" shorts. They're about a little boy who tells tall tales of his own exploits Baron Munchausen-style. Clever concept, but I feel like maybe it's been done better elsewhere. #animation #cartoons

Been seeing these Marvel Oreos in stores. Actual drawn figures. Logo and numbering in the upper left corner. Definitely "comic book-y" packaging. Isn't it kind of weird that Nabisco is actually trying to evoke comics after Marvel's 20+ years of getting people to associate the brand with movies?

Have been spending the morning watching Tom & Jerry.

No, the OTHER Tom & Jerry.

Wouldn't necessarily reccomend it unless you have the same yen for average theatrical cartoons that I do.

I hear Superboy donated an even dozen (mind you, his tend to get beat up in fights with King Shark).

I've been working my way through the early Justice Society of America stuff. So, does anyone know if the JSA ever do any crimefighting together? Because the JSA meet, discuss a problem, and then go off to have individual adventures related to tge problem. They don't even pair off like Fox's JLA.

Oh, we're starting with the betrayal of Snapper Carr. This is going to be rough. I like Snapper. I've liked Snapper since I read JLA: Year One.

Had to get out of the house yesterday because I was going a little stir crazy. Because I had the Justice League on my mind, I went to acomic shop and bought this. I haven't read much of the Sattelite era. I should also try some more of the Detroit period.

I'm still trying to figure out why Sylvester thought a kangaroo looked like a giant mouse when they look more like giant rabbits.

But I guess Hippity Hopper might be an exception.

Okay, so if there's one thing I think we can all agree on, it's that the but original design for Flip the Frog is way better than the second one. (Second one isn't even frog-shaped).

Was just rewatching the failed '97 JLA pilot so I can write a blog post about it. It's a bad pilot but I find it fascinating in some ways. It's like someone tried to create a cross between Friends, The Real World and Lois and Clark with a mash-up of the '70s and late '80s Justice Leagues. [CONT]

I'm glad you like seeing the Wonder Woman. The treat for me was my boy Ted Kord here. A longtime fave. But then, I had an unusual relationship with the JLI heroes. I knew of them but had few of their comics and mostly the serious ones. So, you couldn't have convinced me they weren't a legit JL.

Covers have it in gold. Though, riffing on the jet would make the wings make more sense (after all, Post-Crisis Wonder Woman CAN fly).

Just watched this and heard Doell wondering what armor they'd give Wonder Woman. And the thing is, she was in the Total Justice coloring books and did have armor there. Mainly back-mounted wings, gauntlets and some shin armor. It isn't a figure, but it's something.

I don't know. I'd just like to see something a little more playful and a little more surprising out of the JL, even in adaptation.

And I don't think I'm saying that just because this is what the JL looked like when I started reading.

I'm not going to fight for the Detroit League.

But I will say people do seem to still like the JLI. But it's turned into this idea of "Well, can't we have just a second League that's all these lower-tier funny guys"? And that kind of deflates the JLI a little.

So, I was just trying to watch a "Who will be in the DCU Justice League?" prediction video on YouTube and . . . is it just me or have Justice League roster discussions just gotten more boring since Morrison's run back in '97?

Honestly, the bloom is off the rose for me related to '80s action cartoon nostalgia. Considering most of those cartoons weren't particularly good. I mean, at this point, my favorite incarnation of this franchise was Netflix's younger-skewing computer animated version.

Got some new Golden Age era cartoons in the mail! Ub Iwerks's Flip the Frog and the OTHER Tom & Jerrry. Will they be good? Will they be bad? Will they be uncomfortably racist? I aim to find out!

(At this point, my cartoon collection is just whatever catches my eye).

I know it ended up tripping headfirst into being a '90s comics stereotype. But I like how it used American youth culture signifiers from the past (biker jacket, earring, etc) to show that the Kid was more of a restless, rough-edged "delinquent" and thus a contrast to the more straight-laced Clark.

I've been reading up on the Golden Age of Hollywood cartoons. And I have to say, I am now even MORE confused by some people's obsession with Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. [CONT]
