On this date in 2008 Dustin Pedroia became the 3rd player in MLB history to win MVP after winning ROY the preceding season and was the 1st 2nd baseman to win the award since Nellie Fox in 1959. He led the AL in hits 213, Doubles 54, and Runs 118, while hitting .326, with 17 HR’s and a .869 OPS.

On this date in 2018 the Red Sox defeated the Astros 7-5 to even up the ALCS 1 game apiece. Jackie Bradley Jr had the key hit a bases clearing double in the 3rd inning that gave the Sox a 5-4 lead they never relinquished. Bradley that Series was 3 for 15, but had 2 HR’s and 9 RBI’s to win ALCS MVP.

Happy 33rd Birthday to Mookie Betts, who the Red Sox drafted in the 5th round of the 2011 draft. He played 6 seasons with the Sox, hitting .301 with 139 HR’s, 126 SB’s, a .893 OPS, 134 OPS+ and a 42.5 WAR. He was a 4x AS and GG’er, winning the MVP in 2018.

On this date in 1954 Red Sox Legend Johnny Pesky played in his final MLB Game. Pesky played for the Sox from 1942 -51, missing 3 years during WW2. In his 1st 3 seasons he led the AL in hits and finished 3rd and 4th for MVP in 1942 &46. Overall with the Sox he hit .307 with a .780 OPS and a 34.1 WAR.

Historically, the Red Sox have been on the short end of many lopsided trades. But let's at least acknowledge that Christian Vazquez for Wilyer Abreu was a pretty damn good deal for Boston.

Matt Barnes was the Red Sox 1st rd draft pick in 2011. He never pitched to his potential, but had a long career for the Sox. He pitched relief from 2014-22, and is 3rd in Sox history in games pitched with 429, and 12th in games finished with 134. Overall he was 32-30 with 47 saves and a 4.07 ERA.
