🪵🌲💡RESEARCH💡🌲🪵

In conifers, optical visualization of xylem embolism is limited to thin, peripheral xylem layers, and vulnerability thresholds may differ from those of thicker samples. Light transmission was decreased in dry xylem.

Fig. 3.Illuminance measured through different xylem thicknesses. (A) Illuminance (lux) was measured through different xylem thicknesses (µm) of fully saturated branch sections collected from P. abies (black triangles), P. sylvestris (orange squares), and P. cembra (blue circles) (A), and of either fully saturated (black) or dehydrated to 75% of full weight (gray) of branch sections of P. abies (B; triangles), P. sylvestris (C; squares), and P. cembra (D; circles). Solid lines show the mean and shaded areas represent the corresponding 95% confidence interval.

I'm not sure what iirc amps is, but that's very fascinating. I wonder if that's why tadpoles of M. nepenthicola can live and develop inside the pitchers.
adri-losso.bsky.social
So cool! I kinda suspected it, also because it rarely has upper pitchers. More like detritivorous than carnivorous!

A beautiful pitcher plant from the forests of Borneo:

🌱 𝘕𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢

This plant is well known for providing shelter for other species, such as one of the smallest frogs, 𝘔𝘪𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘩𝘺𝘭𝘢 𝘯𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘢, and the crab spider 𝘔𝘪𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘴 𝘯𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘢.

I’m no zoologist, but as an amphibian lover, these are extremely sad news and hopefully will boost conservation efforts!

How vulnerable are #amphibians to extreme heat? 🐸🌡️

Our paper in @nature.com shows that many amphibians are already overheating, and many more species will be impacted by climate warming globally.

See the thread below for a digest 🧵

As I enjoy photography as much as science, from time to time I'll share some beautiful plants with you.

Kicking off this Bluesky action with this recently published paper on mangroves, with @a-gthy.bsky.social and @profchoat.bsky.social

Key findings:
🍃 Foliar water uptake supports water potential recovery
🌊 Tides do not affect xylem sap composition
