The universe is a wild and wonderful place. But as far as we know contains no life we can share the experience with.

Home is this small blue green rock hanging in the void.

And yet those with influence are doing nothing to protect it, instead they mine it for their own convenience.

It hurts.

It's their feelings that matter to them, and if the truth contradicts that, the feelings win out.

People have come to believe their feelings are more important than reality.

And that? That is TERRIFYING.

Found out today that I’m not eligible for a COVID shot this year. Don’t meet criteria and previously got them due to my employment but *shrugs* I’m not there anymore.

Boots pharmacy will do you one. 100 quid. Ouch. Still may well, depending on how it looks. Keep others safe as well as me.

With the retirement of Mr Bragg from In our time I hope that the BBC hasn’t forgotten what’s engraved above the door. Inform and educate. Not just pander to the noise for eyeballs.

There is still excellent programming but you have to go looking and they too often cancel the good stuff.

Saw an example of greenwashing today in the supermarket. Abrasive washing up sponges stacked loose in a “brown” cardboard box as though they were better for the environment as they had no plastic wrapper.

Still producing microplastics and considerably more expensive than the same in a pack of 4.

Carl Sagan's Profound 'Pale Blue Dot' Speech Set to a Beautifully Calming Classical Soundtrack
Become Human took the iconic "Pale Blue Dot" speech by Carl Sagan, removed some of the noise, and set it to a calming classical soundtrack.

I want to tell you about a friend of mine real quick. I've mentioned her on here before, but you don't know any details yet, and she's about to make history in a very real sense.

Meet Michi Benthaus:

I am far too often told that climate change is wrecking the human supporting biosphere and that I need to do many things to slow it down or humans not yet born will suffer.

Yet the corporate investors who actually can have an impact are doing nothing.

I’m exhausted. Why bother.

You cannot spend yourself out of this current slow motion disaster movie. Buying more shiny solutions is not the solution.
But changing to make it less bad as it could be,
It’s like losing weight. Incredibly hard work, requires consistency and consuming less while doing more practical things.

What if….. the desire for Greenland is not just the natural resources to be plundered, but the fact that, when global climate instability becomes worse, it’s a relatively stable geology? I mean. There are even movies about it!

Following the previous thoughts, perhaps Maslows hierarchy of needs could be considered as: infrastructure supporting interpersonal relationships followed by intrapersonal. To fulfil myself, I need my needs met, my relationships firm and then I can bloom.

Having reflected a little longer, I think I might add industrialisation and community to that list of civilisation skills. Tools only go so far in scaling up.
November 26, 2024 at 2:03 PM
With that in mind, build community, build the capacity to recreate the infrastructure you rely on, and learn or share knowledge.
November 24, 2024 at 2:56 PM
To my mind, the difference between survival and civilisation is interdependent specialisation, infrastructure and tool application. You can have all the knowledge in the world and without people supporting you, you still can’t have what we have now. Anything else is survival or bushcraft.

As we come towards the traditional season of gifting, please pause. Almost everything you see in a major department or big barn store will be in landfill within the decade. If you have to give, give time, give handmade, give second hand and perhaps we can cumulatively make a difference.

What’s a Boeing executives favourite movie? Italian Job, because they only want to blow the doors off.

Dear publishers. When printing books please check the font is comfortable. Twice this month I’ve bought books that are interesting, or have an engaging plot but have had to stop as the font makes my brain hurt. If the only way I can enjoy the authors work is via an ebook then you’ve kinda failed.

Gifting ideas- when visiting a friend or attending a course where someone is sharing their time, skills or passion, why not take something you cooked, something to read and something you made. In my case I try to take bread, book and candle. The books are best sourced from charity shops or 2nd hand.

I needed an escape recently, so took a train ride and went to London. Wandering the south bank I can across this lady busking under Blackfriars by the mural. She has the most wonderful voice and has just released an EP. LoFi vibes and a Sade voice. Enjoy.

Erm. This went through. Who doesn’t need a copy? @seismatters.bsky.social perhaps this will be good for a library. I’m willing to pay for a few copies for a university or 2 at this price!
Treatise of Geophysics hardback book costing just 10 cents right now on Elsevier, what the fuck? And shipping for free? Can we actually make Elsevier lose money? 🧪 #Geology ⚒️

This is ace. The original webcam was set up to check a coffee machine in Cambridge. Finally something as wholesome to watch. Or at least I haven’t seen any “nature red in tooth” moments yet.
someone posted this earlier and it's AMAZING

Live cam of a watering hole at a reserve in Nambia. I've watched zebras, wart hogs, oryx and other critters

Dear #glastonbury. If you’re so keen on promoting your green credentials, and on site you do a great job I’m sure, why so many helicopter movements to just outside the site?Shuttling in the high paying people who want the Instagram friendly experience? That’s a lot of CO2.

If we, collectively, survive the next decade, I actually feel optimistic for the future. It seems that we are approaching a low point that will take a while to work through but eventually it will get better. I have to hold onto that.
