ICYMI - Our new research shows alcohol companies disproportionately deliver alcohol to people at high risk of harm. In this brief read, we cover harms of unchecked online sale & delivery of alcohol + a current opportunity the SA gov has to address these harms fare.org.au/alcohol-deli...
Alcohol delivery exposes people to greater harm, South Australia can lead the country with vital safeguards
The emergence of the online sale of alcohol for delivery to homes means alcohol is more available and there is heightened risk of harm to our community.

In this new research, we looked at online sale and delivery to the home for people at high-risk of harm from alcohol, including people likely experiencing alcohol dependency, impact of related advertising and community support for measures to reduce harm.

Excited to share the first results out of my ARC Early Career Industry Fellowship – starting with these timely results.
The emergence of un-checked online sale and delivery of alcohol to the home has seen an expansion in the availability of alcohol and heightened risk of harm to our community.

It is essential that regulators work to ensure the wellbeing of our community is put first when it comes to regulating the practices of companies that sell and market harmful and addictive products. Today, the ACMA has taken a step toward this vision for alcohol advertising on commercial TV.
aimeebrownbill.bsky.social
Hearing long-held concerns of our community, the ACMA also committed to assessing current alcohol advertising restrictions for commercial TV, in particular the current loophole that allows alcohol advertisements during televised sports when they would otherwise be prohibited.
aimeebrownbill.bsky.social
Good news story! Today the ACMA announced the decision to not register revisions the commercial TV industry proposed for the Commercial Television Industry Code of Practice. This means that 800+ additional hours will not open up for alcohol ads to further flood our TVs.

We have some fantastic news for your Friday.

A proposal that would have opened up an additional 800 hours every year for commercial TV networks to run alcohol ads will not go ahead!

We must protect the community from misleading claims on alcohol products. We've signed an open letter urging Food Ministers to prioritise public health & request a review of a decision that will permit carb & sugar claims on alcohol labels & in advertising. alcoholchangeaus.org.au/open-letter-...

What a fantastic article with top tips by @mikedaube.bsky.social on research translation and advocacy. It also highlights the importance of working with our wider network and community in research translation and advocacy. We can't do it all on our own, but together we can achieve great things!

This is another demonstration of what we have now known for some time – harmful industries will drag their feet for as long as possible when it comes to implementing important public health measures that aim to keep our community healthy when it conflicts with their profits.

A timely study drawing attention to the mandatory requirements now in place for alcohol companies to display the evidence-based pregnancy health warning. The study shows that many alcohol companies delayed introducing the warnings during the lengthy three-year transition phase.

Everybody should be able to enjoy the benefits of using digital technologies to work, learn and play and this can happen when we have safe digital environments. I am grateful to the many researchers and advocates that are working toward this goal.
aimeebrownbill.bsky.social
It includes reforms that compel digital platforms to mitigate risks and design less harmful systems, and to address harms from digital marketing systems specifically, so that people most at risk of harm aren't relentlessly profiled and targeted with marketing for harmful and addictive products.
aimeebrownbill.bsky.social
This includes reforms to bring our privacy laws up to speed with the digital era. The first tranche of reforms introduce a Children's Online Privacy Code, and hopefully we will see a speedy introduction of a second tranche that addresses the further recommendations out of the Privacy Act review.

It was a real pleasure to join @admscentre.org.au on their podcast to speak about our new research report on how people most at risk of harm are targeted with alcohol and gambling marketing on social media. Serious reforms are needed to keep our community safe online.
