Oh Canada, don’t look this gift horse in the mouth. Highly skilled people have just been priced out of the US. Come north where the only taxes on your brain are the worlds most important scientific questions that you’ll help to answer.

Those on an H1B cannot return to the US from tomorrow (Sunday) unless paying $100K. This is an out-of-the blue presidential action. We’ll see software engineers stranded abroad.

One easy to predict outcome: those on US visas will travel less… for work, for conferences etc.

I have no idea why I think this is strange, but walking around Waterloo (the city I spent 7 years of my life researching quantum, and left 7 years ago) and overhearing other people talk about quantum feels bewildering

In Saskatoon? No. I was at Quantum Now in Montreal

I got a wack more awesome quantum stickers but they were too big for this frame. Do I need to start another one?

RIP Ray Laflamme, gone too soon.

Ray was a stellar scientist, the founding director of ⁦‪the IQC‬⁩ and ⁦‪of CIFAR's‬⁩ Quantum Information program, but more importantly a warm & generous human who built community and helped many (particularly junior researchers).

May his memory be a blessing.
