I feel like this photo of masked, armed men pepper spraying a pastor protecting his community is going to be a defining picture of this moment in America for a long, long time.

Ha! I feel that.

Watch for @ncccnc.bsky.social’s research partner — Jessica Sánchez-Jasso, from UManitoba! She’s presenting a poster about her PhD research restoring butterflies in the tall-grass prairie.

I want to explain this a bit b/c it’s important. When the Building Canada Act (then C-5) was introduced, it required the feds to consult w/ the provinces re: PONIs (s 5(7)). But the Act was amended at 3rd reading by the Transportation Committee. Section 5(1.1) was added by the Bloc Québécois. 1/n

Reminder that Bill C-5 REQUIRES consent of the province or territory in which the project is to be built. I doubt BC will be onboard with this pipeline proposal.

H/t to @molszyns.bsky.social for this tidbit.

Publication and consent of province or territory
(1.‍1) Before adding the name of a project to Schedule 1, the Governor in Council must cause a notice of 30 days, that includes the name and description of the project, to be published in the Canada Gazette and must consult with the government of the province or territory in which the project will be carried out, and obtain its written consent if the project falls within areas of exclusive provincial or territorial jurisdiction.

Environmental groups are warning that legislative and regulatory changes to fast-track majornational projects could sideline Indigenous rights, along with health and environmental protections. Read the new info we found in federal reports.

Here's the assignment folks. Write op-eds for your local papers and campus newspapers too. Just. Say. No. This is a classic authoritarian move and risks the future of higher education and science and innovation in the US. Speak out today. No time to lose. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/02/o...

Side note: if you have newsy stories about how biodiversity is being affected by the Trump administration's policies--ideally stories rooted in ongoing scientific research--let me know.

Do you work in conservation science, particularly outside the U.S.? Did you lose your job or funding for your job because of cuts to U.S. federal agencies? Do you want to talk about it? DM me please. (This is for a @biographic.bsky.social story)

Hey, so...Covid rates have gotten real high. Maybe change your behavior to fit this new risk profile? Stop eating indoors at restaurants, mask on mass transit, that kind of thing?
A graph of Covid rates. It's more complex than can be described here, but the important bit is that the rates have gone up a lot since late July, nearly to the heights of last winter.

Our research on Microsoft’s data centers is out and it’s 😬

💡Huge energy demand (as much as New England by 2030!)

⛽️ Fossil fuel reliance (most data centers in states with ≥50% FF grids)

🏫Local impacts (data centers used to justify more gas)

Learn more and take action: stand.earth/microsoft-ai
Background photo of a computer chip with smoking rising from a Microsoft logo on it. Stand.earth logo in top right corner. Text reads "Microsoft has invested more than $80 billion in building out AI. The real cost is yet to come." "Global Ramifications, Local Impact" REPORT icon. White background. Text reads “A hyperscale data center can use as much energy as an entire city. Whether that data center runs on fossil fuels or renewable energy matters - a lot. As of right now most Microsoft data centers are in states with grids that are
≥50% dependent on fossil fuels.” Photo of a data center in the center of the image.
Red background. Text reads “600%” “Microsoft's North American AI data center build-out is set to grow by 600% through 2030, and will demand as much electricity as the entire New England Region.” Graph shows exponentially increasing electricity demand starting in fiscal year 24 and estimating as far as fiscal year 30. White background. Text reads “Unless surging energy demand from Microsoft's data centers is met with round-the-clock renewable electricity, it will lead to a huge increase in climate and local pollution, including extending the life of coal plants as well as new fossil fuel power plants and pipelines to meet the electricity needs of the data centers.” Photo of a polluting data center, with photo credit reading “Credit: Shelley Robbins”.

This is the biggest attack on free speech since the McCarthy era but it also has significantly less popular consensus behind it than the second Red Scare. It's being done on behalf of a minority faction led by the most unpopular president in modern history. Organizing against this can win.

This is the playbook, folks.

If you're not paying attention now and doing something about it, then you're going to have to sit down the rest of your life because democracy is being taken away.

Do not be quiet in this moment.

If you want to fight censorship and stand up for free speech, cancel your Disney & Paramount subscriptions .

We must refuse to allow this level of censorship as it’s the hallmark of authoritarianism.

Put that money towards PBS, NPR, local radio and news stations and independent journalists.
