Word of the day, though I’m sure no one will need it, is ‘eye servant’ (16th century): an individual who only pays attention or works hard when the boss is looking.

Word of the day is ‘librocubicularist’: one who loves nothing better than reading in bed.

(Not easy to say, but I’m glad to know it exists).

According to the poet Shelley that makes you a ‘theist’: a prolific drinker of tea.
Is there a Tea version? 🫖

Love this. ‘Queue’ is from the French word with the same spelling (but pronounced as ‘kuh’) meaning an animal’s long tail.

In the 18th and 19th centuries it also referred to a pigtail and was sometimes spelled as ‘cue’, which gave us the name of the long thin rod used in snooker.
the “ueue” in “queue” is really just there as an example

The earliest surviving quality photographic portrait of an identifiable person was taken this month in 1839. A self portrait by Robert Cornelius.

It's the world’s first successful selfie.

In the Age of Misinformation, let's remember these headlines after the Titanic sank.

During wireless chatter, someone asked: "Are the Titanic passengers safe?” An answer came: "The ship is being towed to Halifax and everyone is ok." That 2nd transmission didnt refer to the Titanic, hence the error.

The face of "Resusci Annie" is based off a death mask of a woman who drowned in Paris in the 1880s. The pathologist on duty became entranced by the girl with the enigmatic half-smile, and commissioned a plaster cast made of her face. In 1955, a toymaker created the CPR doll using that mask. #histmed

Seems I might be in the minority but I enjoyed the #johnlewis Christmas ad. Clever. The way the scenes broke down did remind me of the lovely #Tesco gingerbread house version, which made me well up. And I can’t stand the #Lidl one, don’t know why? Anyway, Happy Christmas!

This little doggie is snoring whilst pressing her paws on me. She has to be pressed against at least one of us. I can’t move which is just as well as I’ve got a lovely cuppa and #ThePenguin on the box.

Fewer people than ever are drinking in Japan for health reasons. As a result, sake brewers have been hard-hit. Between 2000 and 2016, the number of breweries declined from 1,977 to 1,405. That means an average of 2.9 brewers closed every month during a 16-year period.
