If you struggle to build decks that aren't fully optimized, try this exercise:
Build your deck as optimized as you normally would. When you're done, set aside all of the cards you included and build ANOTHER deck without any of the cards you used in your first draft.
Helps things feel less same-y.

Much of the Avatar bonus sheet looks genuinely terrible.
These are Commander staple cards with poor choices of scenes, cropping, and no touching up. The colors are often off and the flavor is hot or miss.
It's worse than the Final Fantasy bonus sheet. A big miss in what looks like a good set.

He is in general not great at controls in games yet so it needs to be forgiving or accessible.
