NO LOYALTY OATHS IN HIGHER ED!

Trump's attacks on our universities are an attempt to consolidate power. This loyalty oath directly undermines our right to academic freedom & goes against every democratic principle our country should uphold.

University Administrations: Reject Trump's "Loyalty Oath" Compacts

Giving local cops, who in ATL’s case are literally trained by IDF soldiers, free rein to brutalize Black and working class residents on behalf of capital is not exactly a bulwark against ICE escalation.

Reminder that it was a Morehouse student making this point at City Hall yesterday (full speech👇) and it was the students standing up against fascist incrementalism and genocide in recent years. Ellison's CBS brought on the two editors that got NYT to publish Tom Cotton's 2020 op-ed calling for soldiers to shoot protesters in the streets. Hard to find a clearer editorial throughline than "anyone protesting murder by the state should be killed for it."

My goals for the coming year include more ultras and finally figuring out how to function on a vegan diet. Not sure where that leaves the Taco Bell 50k on my running calendar.

Anyone could track how a well-compensated cadre of bad-faith idea-merchants have poisoned the information ecosphere. But what makes it tragic is how so many of them have the means to hit eject from the world they have created. The new version of private fallout shelters for the ultra-wealthy.

My worry is that the secretary of war has authorized payouts in the psychological wages of whiteness and that too many of his chosen warriors are all-too gratified by that prospect.

the doj was like "idk"

the state of oregon was like "we looked into it and the answer is no"

OpenAI's Sora gambit is somehow even more reckless and arrogant than we've grown accustomed to with the company. OpenAI is betting that it can spit in the face of creatives, workers, and the largest media companies on the planet—and bend copyright law to its whims.

Good piece.

What I just can’t shake these days is the specter of “end times fascism.” The thought that certain oligarchs foresee only crisis with no viable fix. That their abandonment of the future, so stupid by our standards, has a certain rationality for those who can provision some kind of exit.
nplusonemag.com
It’s hard to identify anything functional about Trumpian stupidity, which is less a form of organizational inertia than a slash-and-burn assault on the very things—universities, public health, market data—that help make the world intelligible. www.nplusonemag.com/issue-51/pol...

The challenge posed by this political crisis is how to take the stupidity seriously without reducing it to a wholly mental or psychiatric, let alone genetic, phenomenon. Stupidity can be understood as...

I’ve learned so much from your work on ed tech — including the stunning extent to which my school’s enterprise systems have been quietly captured by a certain PE firm.

And, with no mention of such, admin is again rolling out the carpet for them at an event week. 🫠

Particularly pessimism-inducing when labor, perhaps our last best hope for any organized mass resistance, a) imagines there’ll even be another election at this point and b) is still prioritizing mobilizing and elite brokerage over deep organizing.

Attended a meeting last week with some union brass whose only political vision was to mobilize for the Dems. We’re so cooked. Just stunning levels of detachment from reality, past and present.
leftistwonk.bsky.social
I don't want to be a pessimist here but if we are actually serious about this, it would require a deep confrontation with the fact that Biden just aggressively used ICE for four years, then Kamala Harris campaigned on expanding ICE funding while a bunch of Dems voted for a bill that doubled ICE $$

If and when America finds a way out of authoritarianism, not only will ICE have to be abolished: All these people will need to be held accountable in a court of law for the monstrosities they are committing - those who are ordering them as well as those who are carrying them out.

Every single one.

Pretty incredible own goal by liberal institutions and many Democratic electeds to crush the exact type of protests in 2024 that would’ve been the most effective way to slow or stop ICE incursions into American cities in 2025
