😊 ☀️ Joy is a political resource.

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon in the Bronx and Harlem at our paper shredding events — we cleared out old junk mail, built community, danced, took family portraits and enjoyed frozen treats (it still felt a lot like summer). Thanks to everyone who joined.

“…the number of American citizens directly under the boot as of now is relatively tiny. But this is precisely the point. Despotism doesn’t impose itself on everyone all at once. It creeps inward from the margins of society.”

The Median Experience Of Tyranny
If the politics of tyranny were self-discrediting, we wouldn't need mantras like "never again."

I understand why people *want* the police to intervene--normies are like, 'I thought cops are supposed to arrest people doing crimes, ICE is right there doing crimes, go do your thing'

but police organizations take nearly every opportunity to be like, 'oh you misunderstood what our thing is'

if blue state governors and mayors aren't already thinking about the reliability of various police forces nominally under their control, they should start immediately

Yep. They have a great lust for the 19th century economy & society. The bad news for them is that it didn’t work the first time & it won’t work now. The bad news for us is that it was a hard fight last time and will be so again.

Huh. I thought labor shortages were supposed to drive wages up but it looks like sharecropping is also an alternative. Waddaya know?

So this is funny.
The administration just issued a rule slashing foreign agricultural worker wages. And to justify it, in a public filing, Trump's Labor Department alleges that Trump's immigration enforcement has devastated the Ag workforce and caused a "risk of supply shock-induced food shortages."
Trump Labor Department Says His Immigration Raids Are Causing a Food Crisis
In a filing in the Federal Register, the Labor Department argues there are “immediate dangers to the American food supply” due to a lack of migrant agricultural workers.

JUST IN: The Republican Mayor of Fairbanks, Alaska’s second biggest city, lost re-election last night to a Democrat.

Mayor David Pruhs is a conservative who fought protections for LGBTQ+ residents; he made comments this year drew condemnation this year from Alaska Natives. He lost to Mindy O'Neall.

@himself.bsky.social talking sense, as usual. Notably: “The administration would have played its cards differently if it had a stronger hand.”

It doesn't make any sense to conceive of due process as a right that individual people can have or not have at all tbh. Bad framing from the start. Due process is a restriction on the government's actions, and by definition it applies to either everyone or no one.

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

Federal Agents Storm South Shore Building, Detaining Families and Children
Families were woken by flashbangs and helicopters as hundreds of federal agents raided their homes. Days later, neighbors are still searching for the missing.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

Given the trend, what do you guess are the odds of seeing military at polling places next year? At the moment I'm giving it 1:3 odds.

But you can make people close their groups to the public&get super paranoid via announcement alone.
devawo.bsky.social
The announcement is the intimidation tactic. They don’t have the personnel or expertise for “infiltration” or just learning and mapping mvmt orgs b/c I hate to tell you there is no organized hard left in this country.

I think if we know anything about social media companies at this point it’s that the main problem they have are human beings using their service

Meta’s new A.I.-generated video app, Vibes, launched last month to overwhelmingly negative reception. The “Hard Fork” co-hosts discussed why. "It’s essentially like TikTok, but if TikTok were populated just by little animated A.I.-generated shorts." nyti.ms/4ocx2LW
A quote from Kevin Roose, co-host of "Hard Fork": "I was not surprised to see Meta announcing a version of essentially a social network with no actual people on it. I think this is the direction that they’ve been moving for several years now."

In 2012, I published a book about the collapse in trust in the mainstream media. I argued that a widely trusted media establishment was probably incompatible with a polarized party system that is heavily sorted by ideology. /1 www.jonathanmladd.com/why-american...
