This helped me today. Small Kindnesses, by Danusha Laméris
Small Kindnesses
by Danusha Laméris

I’ve been thinking about the way, when you walk
down a crowded aisle, people pull in their legs
to let you by. Or how strangers still say “bless you”
when someone sneezes, a leftover
from the Bubonic plague. “Don’t die,” we are saying.
And sometimes, when you spill lemons
from your grocery bag, someone else will help you
pick them up. Mostly, we don’t want to harm each other.
We want to be handed our cup of coffee hot,
and to say thank you to the person handing it. To smile
at them and for them to smile back. For the waitress
to call us honey when she sets down the bowl of clam chowder,
and for the driver in the red pick-up truck to let us pass.
We have so little of each other, now. So far
from tribe and fire. Only these brief moments of exchange.
What if they are the true dwelling of the holy, these
fleeting temples we make together when we say, “Here,
have my seat,” “Go ahead—you first,” “I like your hat.”

Wish Johnson cared enough about pregnant people to worry about the hospitals that will turn them away for fear they’ll be prosecuted for performing basic medical procedures.

AND while it's darkly funny that mentions windmills alongside trans people, that just speaks to the degree he dehumanizes them (uh, trans people).

Sure; but I can't image CBS (even as run by a reactionary) is going to stomach Weiss as a loss-leader! And she doesn't have the tabloid sensibility to keep the news division (whatever that means) afloat as a Fox alternative.

There's not enough caliper-types to make this work, that's main problem.
anamariecox.bsky.social
And CBS doesn't need Weiss, they can kowtow to Trump in the same ways CNN does here.

But the biggest thing is that if MAGA folks (or just reactionary types) want Free Press-style coverage, they can find it elsewhere. And I don't believe normies WANT FP-esquw coverage.

"President Donald Trump and his top aides are using the word 'insurrection' more frequently to describe anti-ICE protests in places like Portland," writes Zachary B. Wolf. https://cnn.it/4pWYmzr

1) Her editorial vision will not pease Trump (she's not conserv enough!)
2) The Trump admin will weaken anyway (I do believe he'll be thwarted eventually, or the whole thing will crumble under its own weight)
3) There are not enough rabid reactionary news consumers to sustain a mainstream news org

I have a strong sense that Bari's tenure in her current role will be short. She may get moved up or she may exist but I don't think it's sustainable.

Today in therapy, I realized 1) I am enough, 2) what I do on social media is a kind of influencing, except not through videos and brand deals, just text reminders to eat high protein meals, to charge your phone away from your bedroom as well as cute photos of my dog.

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

I kind of can’t believe this Bari Weiss quote is even real, and yet www.nytimes.com/2025/10/06/b...
“I know that there are some people in this room who don’t believe that my marriage should have been legal … and that’s ok. Because we’re all Americans who want lower taxes.”

I don't know if "earthly happiness" counts as a life achievement, but at age 50 I met the love of my life, married her, and started a family... all of which was close to a resurrection as happens in real life.

Sister Marion Irvine, who just passed away, started running at 48 years old, when she was a self-described sedentary smoker. When she was 54, she ran in the Olympic Marathon Trials, the oldest athlete to qualify for and compete in them www.runnersworld.com/news/a659959...
