Enjoyed catching up with the @wipsnips.bsky.social.

It's been a busy few days in film land here, with no real phone access and no writing or editing. I did go up and down this escalator a few times, though... always made me feel slightly sorry for it, mind... but I'm weird, I know. 🤦😂

Safe is relative, of course …

From ‘The Big Feat’.

#WiPSnips
Lifting his lantern, Gebill made his way closer to the berths where, in the morning, if any ship's captain didn’t want to have a stern letter written to the harbourmaster, ships would begin the laborious business of moving things from the ships onto the dock and from the dock onto the ships. It was a circular life, but it did make people money, he supposed. Of course, the lantern made no difference at all to the fog. It swallowed the light, giving the shifting vapours the strangest of shapes in the surface, but he liked the light. It almost made him feel safe in a city where feeling safe was somewhat of a luxury.

The word for October 6th is "miss"

Pandora's Secret once again

Anderson vs Star Wars fans
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
Anderson had an electric car. She quite liked the acceleration but missed the noise her v6 used to make. Her EV made all sorts of noises, including an apparently programmable noise when it was reversing. She had read reviews where some weirdos had paid to have the Darth Vader theme, The Imperial March from Star Wars, played when they reversed. Some folks just needed to grow up.

G'morning #WIPSnips! Third straight day of progress provides for today's snip from TLC! Enjoy!
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
“Well in any case, we’re on our way. The auto-pilot is set and we’ll be there in a few minutes,” Driona says. A large space station grows in size then passing by as we accelerate into space. Space here is crowded by many ships coming to and from the station. The stars wheel across the cockpit canopy as the ship turns in a new direction.
“Alright, a bit of prep time before we arrive. About my friend… he’s not exactly that. More like a previous business partner, constantly on the hunt for new business ventures. Not many people would willingly join him in such ventures, so he finds it hard to establish anything in a concrete manner,” Driona explains.
“Why don’t people join him?” I ask, curious as to what the reason might be.
“Because he’s a World Computer… or at least he’s busy trying to make himself one. Bought the rights to the moon in question, been using what few mineral resources are found in it to expand his computational power and slowly expanding out on the surface… but that requires money. Hence the lookout for profitable business ventures. I guess people are leery of such attempted self-growth. You’d have to ask them or him directly for a better answer.” Driona’s face crinkles for a second before she adds an amendment. “Don’t ask him, actually.”
“Fair, might be a sore point,” I agree. Not that I understand much of anything Driona had just said.

G'morning #WIPSnips! I stopped just short of introducing this character yesterday. Work in "All you need is TLC" is progressing nicely.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
I look up to see a dome of twinkly lights overhead, encompassing the vast industrial complex we just landed in the middle of. A massive metal structure loomed ahead, resembling a factory or oil refinery, or something along those lines.
“What’s the twinkling up there?” I ask, pointing at the dome.
“Energy field. Keeps a decent amount of atmosphere inside here and keeps the dust storms out. Makes working on a moon like this easier for him.”
“Him. You haven’t told me his name,” I point out.
“Hmm, No, I didn’t I guess we have some time for me explain, in brief, what you have in store for you ahead. His name is Rondu. He chose it himself, as he felt his previous designation was unfitting,” Driona explains as we start walking towards the large complex. A short road leads from the small collection of landing pads towards it.
“Designation?” I ask.
“Something like ‘Prime Integrated Defence Directive Initiative’ if I remember correctly.”
“PIDDI? Fucking hell, yeah, his new name is better! Who’s the genius who came up with that one?” I ask.
“Don’t know. Some Krek scientists, I think. You’d have to ask Rondu, but don’t actually ask him, it’s a sore subject.”

G'morning #WIPSnips! I kinda cheated with today's snip from TLC, since there's as of yet not a lot in it. The word partly matches, at least.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
“That can be fixed on my ship. We’re not far off, in fact.”
My brain processes the words but glitches halfway through. “You’re ship?”
“Yes, my ship. It’s not much and is in need of servicing, but my friend is not on this world, you see. He owns a small moon elsewhere in this system and has menial contact with the local authority, which is how he could streamline your return home.”
“Oh.” What else can I say to that? In any case, the new topic almost completely banished the previous one from my mind. We approach a large door at the end of the corridor and Driona’s pace increases.
“We’re here,” she says and the door slides opens as she nears it. On the other side is another short corridor with a door and a large window on the right, but the corridor opens up into a large circular space, occupied with more crates and cargo containers, bits of components and tools, and in the middle of it all… a ship.
I suddenly know very well what Luke was talking about in New Hope.
The thing looked ragged! Four engines on short wings straddled a box, standing on four landing skids. Its dark grey hull had numerous panels missing, exposing the ship vitals for all to see. The cockpit up front, to my left, was dirty, as if someone had forgotten to wash it properly after the last rainstorm. A ramp extended down to the floor from the middle of the body of the ship, leading inside of it.

As luck would have it (🙄), I just happened to write this yesterday …

From ‘The Big Feat’.

#WiPSnips
“Tell who?” But no answer came. Probably because the man was out of breath. He was running rather fast.

When something else dropped beside him, a sharp hiss escaping from it, Gebill decided that it was probably best to demand retirement because, though he didn’t actually see what had dropped beside him, flattening itself like a cat ready to pounce, to hunt, he did get the distinct feeling that if the thing didn’t have other things on its mind, it may very well have Gebill on its dinner plate.

The thing pounced. Like a cat, but far, far more eerily.

So not much like a cat. Or possibly very much like one. Gebill wasn’t certain. Cats didn’t like him and avoided him like he avoided his wife’s rolling pin.

The class system rears its ugly head as Murple enfigures …

From ‘The Big Feat’.

#WiPSnips
“I’ve not as finished, your ladyship.” Pointing the tip of her long, white pipe at the noble, Murple raised her eyebrows to end the unseemly interruption. “Thee jewellery is fake. Thy hasn’t once checked to make of certainty as thee money hasn’t been stolen and, moreover, thy’s wearing two different shoes. I put it to thee, Lady Matliz, that thy husband is nowt but a young lad as has spent the majority of thee fortune and had it away on his heels with the young lass as usually does thee hair. And thy wants me to find him. Am I right?”

She allowed the woman to come to the realisation that she wasn’t dealing with some thick Headwarder, it often came as a shock to those that placed great importance on people knowing their place in the world and sticking to it, but Murple didn’t put much store in the class system. She walked where she walked and she talked how she talked. If others placed her in a lowly category just because of the way she looked and spoke, it often meant they underestimated her, which was far better than overestimating her because she was the type to take that overestimate and try her damndest to prove it an underestimate.

“How could a woman of your … standing possibly know all that? Am I not mistaken? You do hail from Yoikshuh, after all? I mean. It’s right there in the name.” The noblewoman tried to rescue her dignity by going on the attack, but it was like being attacked by a flightless duck that hadn’t learned to climb stairs. Murple’s dignity was far above her. Yet still she tried. “‘Oik’?”

Just a short one today.

From ‘The Big Feat’.

#WiPSnips
“Thee tell me, lass. Does thy want me to find thy young fella or not?” Murple moved to her chair, which squeaked, painfully, as she sat down, taking a draw from her pipe. “It was thee as came to me, as I recall.”

“Yes. Well. Can you find him? I desperately miss my beloved and wish him to return to our marital home.” She played the bereft wife so well, but she showed her true self better next. “So I can cut off his jewellery and hang them in the stables.”

A footnote about rivers …

From “Prophet Hearing”.

#WiPSnips
1. Well, it was still a very crowded city, with one of the rivers being little more than a torrential, treacherous torrent a bare few feet wide, but very, very deep, and the other the favoured repository of all waste and excreta. Not to mention the amount of people that considered any relatively quiet corner as a suitable privy and the air of Axillas, as with many cities of its like, was not so much fresh, as likely to give unwary nostrils the kind of groping that would have anybody else punching it in the mouth.

G'morning #WIPSnips! No paws here in Cavern Clipper, only regular feet.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
“Seems Nyxel agrees,” Yvonne remarked, then pointed at the chair across sickbay from Nyxel. “Sit!”
He barely made it two steps when someone kicked at the door repeatedly, as if using their foot to knock. Yvonne walked to the door while again pointing Sam towards the chair.
“Here you go you demanding witch!” Chef said after the door opened, thrusting two plates piled with food towards Yvonne, who smiled.
“Thank you, you haggard old goat,” she replied.
“What’s this for, anyway?” Chef asked and peered into sickbay, spotting Sam first. “O-ho-ho! Putting moves on the new guy? I didn’t think you had it in you, Doc!”
“This is for medical purposes, nothing more,” Yvonne said and turned to head towards Nyxel.
“Medical purposes?” Chef asked, looking puzzled. Yvonne placed the plates next to Nyxel’s head. Blue hands began darting between the plates and Nyxel’s mouth in rapid succession. Sam couldn’t even spot if they were chewing the food properly, if at all.
“Here, what’s that-“

G'morning #WIPSnips! To my surprise, bear does in fact appear in Cavern Clipper, although not the kind of bear one would think.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
Sam sat on the provided stool next to the sickbay bed he’d occupied just days previously. Nyxel lay on it, limp and shivering, while Doctor Yvonne examined them.
“I… I’m not sure…” she said under her breath.
“What’s that, Doc?” Sam asked.
“Look, I’ve never dealt with an alien before, Sam, give me a minute to get my bearings here at least!”
“Uh, sure,” Sam responded, deflating slightly.
The doctor drew in a deep breath and straightened up. “I apologise, that was a bit snippy. Today was busy and unexpected, and now this happens. I can only assume that their physiology is similar to ours without their verbal input on the matter! They do bear the marks of dehydration and some starvation, though, if I’m examining them correctly. But their musculature is strange.”

From ‘Prophet Hearing’.

#WiPSnips
“Well, I could always pay someone else to do it. They do say two mages are better than four.” None was better than any, but Tibias didn’t have the time. “The mage is Hugot Muckleflup. Are you going to do it, or should Cribb, here, put away this bag of Coin he happens to be bouncing on his palm in a nonchalant fashion?”

He was, too. Tibias had taught the boy the technique to make it just the right amount of enticing to the right person. Of course, he’d had to have the boy steal the Coin purse earlier, but he couldn’t get around to it himself at the moment. If this were some kind of projected sequence of images, created by brilliant minds to entertain the masses, pictures of Coins would flash in Gulpor’s eyes, but it wasn’t, so they didn’t. He did lick his lips, though, fingers reaching, tentatively, like claws, toward the bouncing bag.
